Is is possible that Anti-War demonstrations may promote war?

Quoting another member.

"peace demonstrations strengthening the resolve of the Iraqi regime it might be possible for the other Middle East nations to talk Saddam into a peaceful exile. It is quite possible that the peace demonstrations will force us into a war if we want to get Saddam out of power."

Is this a possibility?

If Saddam believed that the entire world was united behind his exile or destruction would he choose exile? Or at least his regime may decide to scram leaving him powerless.

IMO No. Because the anti-war protestors have made it quite clear that we are anti-war and anti-saddam so that no one on either side of the fence gets the wrong ideas.

The Iraqi regime does not consist of fools, only of evil people [90%], who are aware that they are now paying the price for mistakes committed in the past, there are 160 000 troops at their door step waiting for an order to attack. The distant anti-war protestors will hardly overshadow the looming threat facing Saddam and his regime.

Pro-war people always say anti-war people are giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Maybe that was true of Jane Fonda, but it's sure not true now. Most anti-war people want Saddam out, and are willing to use force to press inspections and disarmament on an unwilling Iraqi government.

Saddam is no fool and is aware that all they have to do is hold out long enough for the war protestors to take their political toll and possibly weaken the resolve of the nations prosecuting the war. He also has hope in that with as many people condemming the US position that the UN may hold swing on the USA and UK.

With this possibility looming it gives him a glimmer (hell beams) of hope. In fact I would say a great chance of remaining in power actually could be as high as 30 to 40%.

If he can send a mere 10,000 troops back in body bags he will win the war IMO.

"Because the anti-war protestors have made it quite clear that we are anti-war and anti-saddam"

Bwahahah, who, when, where? Not any of the protests I have seen have even mentioned saddam other than to say we are picking on him.

Sounds plausible to me. Whoever thought of that must be a genius.

Theo,

I see.

The fact that there are troops on his border do not play any role in his current level of compliance. It must have been the pressure applied by the UN with another piece of paper. That is it the 16th resolution was the charm no perhaps it what the 17th but the UN is what is making these little acts of contrition.

I am also sure that the UN would have levied 1441 if america had not threatened war. Yep the UN is on the ball here great job fellars. We can pack up our troops and go home the UN has it under controll.

All inacquarate points:

epidemic quotes below:

1.Saddam is no fool

MR: Yeah Right.

2. 10,000 troops back in body bags....

MR: There will be nearly 350,000 troops. Even a 10% hit makes it 35,000 give or take. The Pentagon expects at least this if not more.

3. I would say a great chance of remaining in power actually could be as high as 30 to 40%.

MR: Oh yeah? And as Dave says: "You also interested in some fine beachfront property I have in Oklahoma"

4) ...possibly weaken the resolve of the nations prosecuting the war...

MR: The resolve was never strong to begin with as far as the general US population goes. It is the Administration (GWB/DR/CP/CR) that are pursuing this for their political survival (this is termed as the JHS Conspiracy theory by epidemic in an unsuccessful attempt to trash/thwart it).

MR = My Response.
