T, but no sympathy.

Peace T-Shirt Leads to Man's Arrest

The ever-growing intolerance of even the most modest dissent.

The best thing to do now is to round up a thousand people wearing these t-shirts to go shopping at the mall.

There are peeps like that everywhere. Can't generalize the mood of the country by isolated incidents like this.

By and large the people don't want war and feel its being thrust upon them.

Last nite I saw on TV one lady asking: "What has Iraq done to us?"

Good question for Ari Fleischer's imaginative mind.

Kids

I'm saddened that this type of thing happens ANYWHERE in the US, but I'm really shocked it happened in Albany.

Theo, there's plenty of intolerance on both sides. Your argument is disingenuous.

osprey4, when you can find me a news story about a guy arrested for wearing a T-shirt that says "Invade Iraq Now", you'll have some credibility. Until then, you don't.

By the way: I said intolerance of dissent, not intolerance itself. There's enough of that to go around; see this post.

There are two sides to every story. I can't believe they were arrested for simply walking around with these shirts on. They had to have been doing more than that to create enough of a disturbance for security to be called in the first place, let alone for security to ask them to leave.

Signs posted at entrances to the mall say that "wearing of apparel... likely to provoke disturbances... is prohibited" at the mall.

AFAIK the mall is private property if you are asked to leave you must comply. If you do not comply you are subject to arrest.

Freedom of speech does not apply to private property does it.

There were no civil liberties taken away.

Personally I do not think that I would have requested he take off his shirt as it don't bug me. However that is me. If the mall did not want to promote that point of view then they IMO can ask you to comply with their wishes even if they are a bit extreme.

I wasn't talking about the First Amendment (although the courts have held that one still has some free-speech rights, even in malls). I still think it's a sad day when wearing a T-shirt with "Give Peace a Chance" is considered to be

What are the odds that the other T-shirts sold (and worn) there are obscene, politically incorrect, or both?

I really wish this war would start soon. The sooner it starts the sooner it will be over. It would be great if we could just unite behind the idea that the only solution here is forcing Saddam out of power.
