Let's hear it for knee-jerk reactions

The school administrators are a joke. Hmmm, lawsuit? I betcha they're regretting that decision now.

Looks as though the kid got bounced on charges of being guilty of bad taste. Which is bad, I know, but when did it become illegal?

Sure are some "scared stupid" people out there, though. How unfortunate the frequency with which we see such people in charge of our children.

I think school uniforms are a great idea myself. Causes things like this to not be so common. Also makes it easier for the have-nots to blend in with the haves.

I used to hate the idea of uniforms. My mother wanted to send me to Catholic school, and at the time, I was largely unaware of the dangers of Nuns... I just couldn't stand the idea of uniforms, is all!

The shirt was done in bad taste, even though his message was a good one, provided it really was what he says it is. I thin he should have used another way of drawing this, if it really is what he meant. I don't see how you get the message he is trying to convey from the shirt described. If a shirt is offensive, then kids get punished. I have seen some suspended for far lesser forms of bad taste.

Hmmm?

Bad taste is bad taste...not neccessarily harmful in itself, just something that reflects poorly on the person who advances it.

Usually, it's an aberration that gets its ownself corrected when the rest of us start the person...but throwing them out of school?

I've been told to leave school or relinquish my shirt before, too.

Like that popular t-shirt with the 69 rat couples on it...

Well, yeah. You were asking for it... Sounds like you got it, too!

This kid, I don't think he was ASKING to make trouble, he just did.

And got suspended from school. This, I believe, is the point.

I was threatened with suspension at my high-school for bringing a rubber-chicken to the pregame shows (I was the mascot). There is a long story behind the origin of the rubber chicken. But I was doing nothing innappropriate or vulgar with it (standard issue chicken BTW). Just had it on my person. A certain board member took offense; first claim was it represented cruelty to animals, second was it was a safety hazard (could hit someone with it). Superintendent asked me to give him the chicken once after one of the pregame shows and I told him no and went into the locker room. It was my greatest stand against authority =)

Once the Media caught wind of the story I was called to the office for a meeting with the Superintendent, Vice Principal, Principal and Athletic Director. They told me they had no problems at all with the rubber chicken. This was after the newspaper article and before the 6PM news interview.

I was also overheard saying "this sucks" to someone in the hallway and given 3 hours after school (I was overheard in passing). That was only after I pled my case and explained that when kids say "this sucks" we aren't referring to a sexual act... just our way of showing our displeasure of something. 3 hours afterschool with no priors.

School admins can get way out of hand.

BTW... I am in between on this kid. I too have an issue with the message he was trying to convey. I'd have to see the shirt. Wouldn't mind knowing some of the other details also; i.e. was he asked to turn it inside out, change, priors, etc.
