I have seen some suspended for far lesser forms of bad taste.

I was threatened with suspension at my high-school for bringing a rubber-chicken to the pregame shows (I was the mascot). There is a long story behind the origin of the rubber chicken. But I was doing nothing innappropriate or vulgar with it (standard issue chicken BTW). Just had it on my person. A certain board member took offense; first claim was it represented cruelty to animals, second was it was a safety hazard (could hit someone with it). Superintendent asked me to give him the chicken once after one of the pregame shows and I told him no and went into the locker room. It was my greatest stand against authority =)
Once the Media caught wind of the story I was called to the office for a meeting with the Superintendent, Vice Principal, Principal and Athletic Director. They told me they had no problems at all with the rubber chicken. This was after the newspaper article and before the 6PM news interview.
I was also overheard saying "this sucks" to someone in the hallway and given 3 hours after school (I was overheard in passing). That was only after I pled my case and explained that when kids say "this sucks" we aren't referring to a sexual act... just our way of showing our displeasure of something. 3 hours afterschool with no priors.
School admins can get way out of hand.
BTW... I am in between on this kid. I too have an issue with the message he was trying to convey. I'd have to see the shirt. Wouldn't mind knowing some of the other details also; i.e. was he asked to turn it inside out, change, priors, etc.
