Jargonistic, eh? We'll have to fix that.
Basically, they say there are two areas on which political ideologies (ie left and right stuff) is based on. One is moral issues (ie abortion, religion, kinds of laws they support, how strictly they enforce laws, etc), the other is financial stuff (ie taxes and your money at work). They say there are 5 main ideologies:
Conservative:
- Government control of the economy should be minimal (ie low taxes but a small government). Equal opportunity and legal business practice should be guaranteed though (ie we like business, enforce competition, death to Enron-scandals). (Fiscal/Economic)
- Strong moral definitions should be held (self explanitory). Strict criminal law and sentencing are necessary (self explanitory). Freedom and rights cannot be compromised. A strong emphasis is placed on the individual (ie Ayn Rand objectivism to what we see in America today, as opposed to Soviet style contol over the people) (Moral/Social)
Libertarian:
- Government control of the economy should be minimal (let the people do as they please). (Fiscal/Economic)
- As long as actions do not harm others, they should be legal(no murder, but stuff like broadcasting over an FM transmitter on an unused frequency, or owning a gun, would be legal). Freedom and rights cannot be compromised (Moral/Social)
Moderate:
- The moderate tends to stand with different groups on an issue to issue basis...blah blah blah....some moderates tend to stick to either the left or the right most of the time.
Liberal:
-Strong government involvement and regulation of the economy (ie high taxes, big government, control the busniesses). Redistribution of wealth and strict regulation of business by the government (think targeted tax cuts like what happend a few years ago). (Fiscal/Economic)
- As long as actions do not harm others, they should be legal (see libertarian). Loose Constitutional interpretation (well, they had to defend against the king, and now we dont' have to, so Amendment 2 (for all you Canadians, that's the Amendment that gives us the right to own guns) is defunct and we should ignore it). The society is emphasized (rather than the individual, or 'it's good for society!'). (Moral/Social)
Communist (not to be confused with Socialist):
- Complete government involvement and regulation of the economy (ie planned econimics, think Soviet Union and Cuba (China uses free market economics and is thus not completely communist)). Redistribution of wealth is a key. The government owns, runs, and controls all business (for example, see Soviet Union). (Fiscal/Economic)
* The ends justify the means (doesn't matter if we gass hundreds of people as long as we have peace and stability). All is done for the good of "society."(usually meaning the head honcho's in charge, unless the society is marxist, which is Greekian democracy so then there aren't REALLY head honchos) In practice traditional morals are replaced by loyalty to the government and what the communist party dictates (look what happened to China's view of women and children because of their government). Traditional Marxist ideas include dissolving the family unit (ie Mommy and Daddy aren't part of the 'family'). Actions are done supposedly in the "interest of the people" by the government (it's in the intrest of the people that we build this multibillion dollar nuclear sub rather than feed everyone in Siberia for the next 20 years). (Moral/Social)
Hope that's simplified enough.
edit: For you intelectual types, I know how flawed Greek Democracy is, so hence the REALLY. So before you start, back off.
