Instant Messenger and work

Do any of you use instant messenger software at work to connect with other IT people for quick solutions?

I have contemplated it but find it hard to break from the pattern of drafting e-mail messages.

I like looking in my mailbox for info and fear the constant interruption of IMs.

What's your take.

if you could IM someone at work rather than type an email would that be quicker and more efficient? i think so for sure.
plus with file transfer and voice optimization its a pretty decent little program id have to say. although all buddy lists werent available yesterday for a little while!!!

Yahoo messanger seems to work just about everywhere.
I can get it to work here at work, with just the web proxy.
Works great!
I think ICQ can now do this too, but I already have a local corp server here, so I cant run it twice. trust me, bad things happen...

Personally, I liked the two way pagers we had for a year, they have a little keyboard on them!
They were totally cool, and we used them daily, until they went cheap on us.....

now there's a thought - transfering files which our e-mail filter would otherwise block.....

could be good for self extracting files for patches and emergency DAT transfers....

Sounds like it could be worthwhile....

Let me ruminate over it for a little longer...

Send a message via ICQ to NeoStarO1 Send a message via AIM to NeoStarO1 Send a message via Yahoo to NeoStarO1
I do not know which versions this is advailable on all windows platforms, but what about using the winpopups?

Only drawback to instant messaging at work and requiring a response immediately they need to be at the computer now to get the msg.

On another note

I have the motorola T950 two way pager, its sweet! Great to get ahold of me for emergencys and also for people to tell me to answer my phone. I use this mainly because of the fact that I am deaf and cannot hear the phone ring and don't always see my light flashing to tell me the phone has been activated.

Been using MSN , Yahoo, Instant Messenger, and ICQ for a while to communicate with remote IT and local. Works good and saves a phone call or email.
