Buffy: last episode May 20th
I just heard this on the radio yesterday that the WB has pulled the plug on Buffy after 7 years, that the last episode will be aired May 20th.
I wasn't aware that viewership on the cult drama has gone down over the years... Or perhaps the show has gotten too expensive to produce. I can't think of why this is happening. I thought this show would go on forever.

Ive been an avid watcher of this show since the start, but the last series sucked. The start of this one wasnt great but it seems to be getting better hopefully they can make this show go out with a bang. And yeah i heard sarah michelle gellar was not going to stay with it.
Oh well Angel is still on and it is still good.

Yeah, I didn't notice til I went to the WB website today that it was actually on UPN. That's what a local radio DJ said (WB).
Sure enough, today I got my free copy of Entertainment Weekly with SMG on the cover saying it's over.

There may well be a spinoff - and hopefully if there is Joss will take a more active role like he did in earlier seasons of BTVS - which offered some of the most compelling television I've ever seen. Truly profound stuff. But since Joss's new baby "Firefly" got cut, maybe he'll focus on making improvements to Angel and be committed to making another Kewl Buffy spinoff. After all, SMG was just one slayer - and who really needs a slayer with the rest of the group there? I think there's still potential.
I do hope, however that if a spinoff is undertaken, that UPN won't be allowed to have it. This fledgling network simply doesn't "get it". They screw with their viewer base so often, and make it difficult or impossible for an audience to watch a show it's ridiculous. Since BTVS went over to UPN, a rough guess of half (maybe more) of the new episodes - not even just reruns - NEW episodes! - were put off to some random time for sporting events that local affiliates were allowed to pursue.
The "real" networks understood that they were alienating their audience with sports programming, and thus eliminated the sports programming from their affiliates. (for the most part) Most of the problem stemmed from their inconsistencies and failure of advance notice. Either way, if they couldn't make a serious commitment to airing a show, they shouldn't have even bid for it. I think things would have been a lot different if Buffy had stayed on the WB...

about time it was cancelled
I will somewhat agree with cyphen as the earliest episodes were tolerable (not pleasing, just tolerable), but it was a straight drop to the bottom after the first couple of seasons.
Still, Buffy quickly became too predictable, redundant, and lacking in content development for my viewing habits.

to me, season 2 heralded some of the most ingenious television i've seen... There's so much undertone and subtlety when you look behind the story...
"I only Have Eyes for You" was simply brilliant. More of that, please....
