Many layoffs in San Diego. My company is debating round two. One of my good friends is unemployed, and my oldest brother is moving back in with the parental units, he's in such bad shape.

Geting laid off SUCKS !!!! I have moved to Las Vegas only to find that the IT world here is worse than So. Cal. I have been fortunate to a small degree however. I am actually back with the same company that just laid me off 2 weeks ago! I have a contract that runs into the beginning of January. The bad part was that I had to take a 33% pay cut. I am working at Best Buy(no jokes!) at nights to make up the difference. This is a horrible time to be looking for work. There are litterally hundreds of people competing for every job. Oh well...at least I have an income through the holidaze.... steve

Well, it would be better to say who isn't laying off here in North Tejas.
Nortel, several thousand
AMR (american airlines) like 5000 +
Delta airlines several hundred(or more)
Alcatel
MCI Worldcom(they have (had) a major operation in the infomart in Dallas, like two whole floors, but were down to part of one floor plus their network node on the same floor when I attended a training school there back in June of this year. Nothing but empty cubes in all directions)
Lucent
Genuity
Motorola
Halliburton closed up in Ft. Worth and moved to Houston.
Just about all the telecom companies have been hit hard.
One plus is that Lockheed Martin just got the JSF contract, so that helps a little, but they really wont be adding a lot of jobs till later
Northrup Grumman/ vought aircraft, GE engine sevices(jet/turbine engine repair/refurb)

This doesn't take into account all the small to medium size places that have let people go or folded all together.
With all the IT talent that has been let go, It is EXTREMELY tought trying to start out in the field around here. For me the resumes have been flying, but no bites as of yet.. but I refuse to let it get me down. Plus I have been blessed with Mrs desmocat having a stable job that pays pretty well, with the local gov't so we can make it on just her salary if we have to.

Seattle and area:

Boeing, most high-tech companies, and most of the places that aren't laying people off aren't hiring.

I got laid off in May. It sucked for a few days, but now I'm glad that it happened. I'd never had the courage to make the jump to consulting because of the uncertainty involved. A friend of mine had done it as a side business for several years and had quit his day job to do it full time earlier in the year. He was able to put me to work right away while I went to some interviews, but I decided after a couple of weeks that I wanted to do it full time too. It's still a little scary when a contract is coming to the end though. Now I get paid to tell people what to do.

But, back to the subject, here are a few companies in the vicinity laying people off:
  • Iomega (me included)
  • Autoliv (automotive airbags)
  • Parker Hannafin (aerospace)
  • Geneva Steel
BTW if anybody needs ISO 9000 consulting, training, or auditing give me a buzz. hehe

Been having lay offs every other week here since august. These next three weeks will be the single longest stretch of employment we've had since before the 4th of July shut down.

Worst is not knowing for certain about the first of the year. Does anyone know what GM plans to do???

On a broader note, the entire auto industry is just about ready to crumble. Been reading the news everyday in the paper. DCX is hitting on a "7% Solution" (reduction in pay scale), while announcing last week layoffs in the thousands...

Ford is in even worse shape, at least the papers say so, but I haven't seen any numbers for the layoffs...

Has anyone seen anywhere that is employing more people because of the tax incentives????????

Well, not the entire auto industry. One of the companies I'm doing consulting with converts regular cars into armored vehicles. For some reason, they've been doing quite well lately.
