FBI finally busted our local terrorist

Sami Al-Arian is finally arrested for terrorist ties. We've been waiting a while for this. The school (USF) didn't want to fire him over a year ago because of tenure and outcry from his supporters. We pretty much knew he was involved but now it seems they have enough proof to do something.

Another one bites the dust.

Yep, the stories about him earlier last year infuriated me that USF wouldn't fire him. I'm glad he's gone.

I heard a rumor about 6 months ago that he was exiled from the US and that he went to Lebanon and they kicked him out as well. I assume that was purely a rumor though, since he was arrested here.

I wonder if USF will fire him now?

His brother was sent to Lebanon. That's the one you read about earlier.

Yes, they've been trying to get him for years. But it's only now, with the lower standards of probable cause and association under the USA Patriot Act, that they've been able to charge him with "giving material support" to a "terrorist organization". "Material support" and "terrorist" are defined so loosely that the Government could, as they say, indict a ham sandwich.

I hold no brief for this guy. But the fact is that they don't have anything new on him; they just have a new law that makes it a cinch to nail anyone.

Well, I'm going to assume they have been following him like a shadow and do have some new info. If no new info they wouldn't have waited so long. Unless they were waiting to get more ties to others.( The law has been passed for a while) They do have 8 more suspects rounded up so far. I'm assuming the FBI would like to get them all at once so as not to alert the rest of the bunch.

Maybe a salami or bologna sandwich but not a ham sandwich.lol

You can thank Bill O'Reilly for keeping Ashcroft's feet to the fire on this one. I'd like to see the chain of evidence before I decide if the new laws made it easier, or that maybe the FBI is working better with new leadership.

BTW: Theophylact, can you let me in on what "new" techniques led to his arrest due to the new Homeland Secuity bill? I can't seem to get the particulars. Your answer indicated you have out - researched me...

Not the Homeland Security bill, the USA Patriot Act.
