Teen Near Death After Transplant Error

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2003Feb18.html
Imagine how the parents feel. They think their daughter is getting a new lease on life only to have it botched up by this mistake. You can only pray for the best, but reality is that she will most likely die.

I've been hoping to get a kidney transplant, but after reading this I'd just as soon as stay on dialysis .

Sad.

You would think that this would be the least likely complication.

It is akin to forgetting to plug in the TV while troubleshooting it (of course with worse ramifications) it is just the first dam thing you check before continuing.

But it is the number one priority when transplanting to make sure tissue is as compatible as possible. Seems so unlikely that this is where the mistake should have been made.

Leaving a sponge in during emergency surgery is one thing but this seems rediculous.

What makes you think they wont anyways? They will make a bundle on it and move their whole family to the states and then live off the fat of the land

[yahoo news quote]
Jesica needed the transplant because a heart deformity kept her lungs from getting oxygen into her blood. Her parents paid an immigrant smuggler to get the family into the United States from Mexico three years ago, in part for the better odds of landing a transplant for Jesica. [end quote]

Sadly, I fear that Mtsnow is correct. I wonder if they ever obtained American Citizenship, or the proper authorization, to stay in this country since being smuggled in?

Stupid mistake! Darn that hospital! I can't believe they would make a mistake like that! How could they? There's got to be some kind of homicide behind this. Sorry, I watch Law&Order too much.

She would have been better off without the operation...

It's hard to understand how mistakes like this happen, but they certainly do.

That's horible. Its hard to believe that mistakes like this can happen. . .

If you read the rest of the story, there have been a couple of mistakes made like this in the past. Its so sad.

How is it possible for people that are supposedly doctors and smart and stuff to make such simple mistakes! I literally don't believe this was a mistake!
