windows to unix in the workplace?

Currently i work as a field tech for pc's and printers at my job. mostly windows related stuff. i just got asked if id like to be trained on sun/unix systems because they need someone to fill the position for a head guy that will be moving on. i hear this guy's(unix guy at my job) damn smart too although my conversations with him have been few and far between. they asked me if im interested in it since i have better knowledge (over the other 2 guys there) with software/hardware according to my boss. id be on call most of the time though, its not really a 9-5 thing which is beat.

but...........i can enter a different field since id be gaining different experience. its not for more money at the moment but im up for a review within the next few months. i told him i need a day or 2 to think about it. maybe my experience at home with different distros of linux might help at all? i think im leaning towards yes as far as taking the position. what do you think?

Good for you!
You will also get to play with some other UNIX systems such as BSD, SysV and Solaris presumably? If so you get to broaden your experience even more!

Once you have got to grips with the basics of using the shell of your choice (bash or zsh for me) for everyday admin type jobs on a linuxbox you should find it fairly easy to swap to other UNIX flavours. I run mostly debian, openBSD and netBSD boxes and to be honest its not a major culure shock changing between them. Bits and pieces are different, such as disklabel, but you should be able to pick it up fast.

Systems like Tru64, HP-UX, Sco and Solaris are worth a play if you get the oppertunity. I am currently looking for some old 64-bit hardware (alpha, Sun or vax) to setup some test boxes. openvms (not UNIX) has also caught my eye and I have been messing around on some public access systems.

Anyway, good luck with the job.
