What songs would you include to teach kids a "history of rock"???

Id like to put together a collection of songs that I/YOU grew up listening to as a kid for some of my kid friends to listen to hopefully allowing/helping them to appreciate or understand "music" more then the newest commercial stuff being pushed their way---

Just had a neighborkid bring the new 50¢ album to share which is selling megacopies right now (Dr Dre/Eminem are behind this album) I cringed---his Mom doesnt speak English and if she did she wouldnt have purchased it for him (Jose is 10)

This selection should be easy to put together and ANY assistance will be appreciated as id like to vary the artists and songs---can Judas Priest/James Brown/Queen/and Chicago go together---sure why not?

Watched a VH-1 show called 100 Greatest artists of hard rock and it was pretty cool---

I realized how much FANTASTIC music has been created thru my youth and almost been lost to todays commercial tastes ala 50¢ etc, these kids today will never be exposed to all that fantastic material due to todays commercial radio experience, I guess thats where I need some help---

Here was their list:
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Black Sabbath
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. AC/DC
5. Metallica
6. Nirvana
7. Van Halen
8. The Who
9. Guns N' Roses
10. KISS
11. Aerosmith
12. The Sex Pistols
13. Queen
14. Soundgarden
15. Pink Floyd
16. Cream
17. The Ramones
18. Ozzy Osbourne
19. The Clash
20. Alice Cooper
21. Pearl Jam
22. Deep Purple
23. Judas Priest
24. Iron Maiden
25. Cheap Trick
26. Motorhead
27. Iggy Pop/ The Stooges
28. Rush
29. Motley Crue
30. Red Hot Chili Peppers
31. Def Leppard
32. The Doors
33. Rage Against The Machine
34. Alice in Chains
35. Jane's Addiction
36. Frank Zappa
37. Yardbirds
38. MC5
39. Neil Young & Crazy Horse
40. Stone Temple Pilots
41. Ted Nugent
42. The Kinks
43. Nine Inch Nails
44. ZZ Top
45. Pantera
46. Scorpions
47. The Rollins Band/ Black Flag
48. Janis Joplin
49. Smashing Pumpkins
50. Slayer
51. Thin Lizzy
52. Faith No More
53. Korn
54. Sonic Youth
55. Blue Oyster Cult
56. White Zombie
57. Heart
58. Anthrax
59. Bad Company
60. The New York Dolls
61. Jethro Tull
62. Ministry
63. Boston
64. Steppenwolf
65. The Cult
66. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
67. Rolling Stones
68. Husker Du
69. Megadeth
70. Living Colour
71. Lynyrd Skynyrd
72. Foo Fighters
73. Twisted Sister
74. Pat Benatar
75. Spinal Tap
76. Bon Jovi
77. Hole
78. Marilyn Manson
79. Ratt
80. Green Day

93. Lenny Kravitz
94. Yes
95. Fugazi
96. Meat Loaf
97. Primus
98. Mountain
99. Bad Brains
100. Quiet Riot

How can a kid listen to great songs by Cream, Sabbath, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Mountain, Skynard, Tull, Moody Blues, Blue Oyster Cult, Doors, Zappa, Bowie, Janis, Iggy, Yardbirds, Yes, Rush, Clash, Alice Cooper, etc etc etc etc etc etc X 100 nowadays???---

If they CAN hear it on the radio its a select hit/song played over and over---all those other GREAT tracks that were on the album dont get heard and its a shame...

The first experience of music I remember hearing was "Listen to rhythm of the falling rain" (I only now know was by the Cascades) in about 1963 on the way to a swim lesson---I was about 7 (now 47)---next thing I remember was Cream at about 10 with "I feel FREE" a completely different type of music setting me up for all that was to come and I listened intently---the local radiostation indulged us completely (KNAC) playing the tracks we requested in minutes, without fluff, ads or payola--- it all seems to be lost now---

Im just having a hard time with these kids not knowing the music of John Lee Hooker, Freddie Mercury, Frank Zappa etc just because no-one shared it with them...

Care to assist?

(Yes ive seen the GREATEST ROCK of all ages compilations available for sale on TV featuring "Stairway to Heaven" as #1)

How bout some favorite tracks of yours?
Have you seen a compiled list of rock hits you can direct me to?
Do you know of any sources for a list of sorts?
(Hope I can P2P all the choices or you can email your faves to me)

Thanks for any input---
:-)

***Song choices preferred, I cant root the tracks out from your BAND choices ;-)***

My brother-in-law teaches middle school. His kids listen to radio stations that play material from the bands that you listed above. They are amazed that my brother-in-law is familiar with the music the kids like. Go figure! I guess they think it's new stuff? Most of his kids don't like the POP that the top 40 stations are playing.

Why? If you like most the other stuff on that list, then you like Ugly Kid Joe.

Listen to the "America's Least Wanted" CD. They got some of the best sounding, crunchiest, most perfect sounding metal distortion you'll ever hear. Right up there with Pantera in regards to the perfect metal crunch.

And the song "Madman"? Come on! That's not only a classic, totally kick ass rockin' tune, but it's one of the few public paradies of Disneyland that the Disney Corporation wasn't able to squash. It's an outstanding tune. Killer riff. Check it out if you've never heard it.

Oh, and for that crunch I'm talking about listen to Neighbor, as loud as possible when the song begins.

Hmmm may prove more difficult then im thinking---

Im looking at a possible 20 track (maybe 40?) compilation---

Not really looking for band choices but more importantly song choices a favorite you would consider relevant and would like to pass on not allowing to be forgotten...

Im no critic believe me---but it would be tough to include Madman and Neighbor (I just listened to em) and leave off for instance Creams White room or the Eagles -live- Hotel California or similar...

DO NOT forget to put some rush on there. one of my 5 all-time favs. they didn't need all the dark undertones or flashy clothes/makeup, they just made some dern good music. "If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice" My all-time favorite quote is from Rush's 'Freewill'

btw, I'm only 25!
