Systems tragedy in the Upper Peninsula

this unfortunate incident happened this weekend in a small community close to where i live. my wife works as a corrections officer, tho at a different prison than the one that employed the victims and shooter in the story. i am aquainted with Teirney. he worked on a construction job that i was on back in 1989. i remember the incident with his stepfather also. i was rather suprised to find out he was hired as a corrections officer.

[Marquette County, February 17
Victim's Names Released In Double Homicide

Steven Edward Tierney was arraigned Sunday morning on two counts of open murder, in an unusual Sunday session before Judge Dennis Girard in Marquette County District Court. Tierney stood silent as Judge Giarard read the charges against him.

Tierney is accused of shooting to death 34-year-old Sally Kay Paajanen and 31-year-old Craig Allen Fleck. Their bodies were found by a neighbor before 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning. They were lying in the snow-covered driveway of Paajanen's Skandia residence at 348 Lawson Road. Fleck is from Munising as is Tierney.

Prosecutor Gary Walker says Paajanen and Fleck died due to gunshot wounds. Tierney was arrested at his parents' home in Humbolt Township late Saturday night without incident. Walker says Tierney was found with a 30/30 rifle and a box of ammunition. A box holds twenty shells. Five rounds were in the rifle, eleven rounds were in the box.

Walker also stated that "The crime lab has discovered four 30/30 shell casings. The defendant also gave a statement to police after being placed under arrest last night, that he is the individual who shot the victims."

Paajanen and Fleck were returning to the Skandia home from working the overnight shift at the Alger Maximum Security Prison in Munising. Both were corrections officers. Tierney was also a corrections officer. Officials are saying nothing more about the relationship between the two victims and suspect. The bodies were not removed from the crime scene until noon Sunday. More information should come out at Tierney's preliminary hearing scheduled for 9:00 a.m., February 25.

TV6 News has learned the suspect, Steven Edward Tierney, shot his stepfather in June 1993. Tierney is the stepson of John Elliot, a former Michigan State Police Officer. Tierney shot Elliot during a domestic dispute between Elliot and his wife at their Humbolt Township home. It was determined later Tierney shot Elliot in an effort to protect his mother. Tierney is being held in the Marquette County Jail without bond. He is charged with two felonies, which could put him in prison for life. ]

sometimes,i just dont understand some of lifes incidents. what drives humans to do some of the horrific things,or rather the shock of being aquainted with someone and then that person doing something like this. i dunno. trying to make sense of things like this makes my head hurt.

i thank everyone here for letting me get this out. the more i think about it,the weirder it gets.

my heart goes out to the victims families and friends.
