Those folks take every chance they can get to hike the prices :/

Middle-eastern affairs aside, the sustained cold weather we've been experiencing has alot to do with prices. Oil flows into the refineries at a fairly consistent rate, so if the demand for heating oil increases due colder than predicted temps, that means that either the gasoline production, or the overall petroleum supply will be reduced. Prices are raised when supply is short to discourage distributors and retailers from buying more than they need which would result in some facilities being sold out while others are sitting on surpluses. I know that last week most of the storage facilities in PA either ran very low or ran completely out of 87 gas before they could get resupplied. Oil and gas take a while to process, so I think everyone just needs to understand that it might take a little while for the oil industry to adjust when mother nature throws an unexpected curve. Winters on the East coast have been very mild for the last several years and if you check the records, gas and oil prices have also been mild comparatively for at least the last 2. | |

When oil prices are raised, who gets the money in extra profits? The oil companies or the gas station franchises? About 18 months ago prices in NJ at some gas stations were below $1. So there's a 50-60% increase in less than 2 years.
Someone is making windfall profits because the international spot prices have been not that volatile and have certainly not gone up that much.
My guess is the big oil companies are making a killing.
May be a good time to buy oil company shares.
If the war starts by end Feb and there are concerns on supply, they may even go to $2 as oil companies make unprecedented profits. These companies are ruthless in squeezing maximum profits out of the common man.
The production, distribution, sales expenses associated with gas have probably increased but not that much.
Its a classic example of Big Oil Money exploiting the supply-demand curve on the one hand and the impending Middle East oil crisis due to war on the other hand.
I wouldn't be surprised if the oil companies have already started stockpiling supplies and reducing supply to make extra profit.
Pure and simple economics.
Oil companies are not charities. They like to profiteer like anyone else.

As much as I hate the hit on my pocketbook and on those less fortunate, I smile when I look at all those soccer moms and spoiled college kids tooling around in their massive SUV's.
