Well there was a report in our papers this morning that it could have been caused by sprite lightning. Apparently sprite lightning is a very rare form of lightning that only happens way up high. Some guy took several pictures, that haven't been released yet, of the Shuttle just before the incident, and there was a strange right angle of what looked like lightning. Apparently NASA is interested in this.

Edit: Oops, just seen this thread about cosmic bolts.

I heard they showed some of those pictures on cable news, but I haven't seen them yet. I want to, though.

Alright I know that they are capable of taking a high quality picture while the shuttle is in orbit, but could you all explain to me how they are going to get a quality picture of the underside of the shuttle through all of the fire/plasma that is rolling off of it?

I took this photo from a VCR freeze frame, it was on the BBC and ITV news, the other day. I think it is a shot of the top wing surface, and if I remember correctly they said it was taken while the shuttle was still in space.

Sorry for the crappy photos, there must be a trick to getting shots from a TV.

How would they have gotten that picture? I thought they had been saying that there was no way for them to look at the wing.

As I understood it, there was no way to look at the bottom of the wing, and I think this is the top surface, from the colour.
