Overclock a Furnace?????

Any of you not so well balanced TechIMO-ians ever had one of those not so right thoughts?

The ones that go flutering though your head after hours at the keyboard, when for some dumb BIO reason you have to do something less meaningful?

One of those thoughts that just trancends the everyday, and enters the Digital Zone?

A thought like the one I just had a few minutes ago.

You see, the other day it actually got up into the fifties here for a couple hours. Thus in a spurt of wierdness I shut the furnace off (turned the thermostat down really low). Well that was yesterday. Today the temp is south of freezing and still going. New Ice Age, news at eleven...

Anyway I of course reset the thermostat and returned to the keyboard. Only (after nearly 12 hours) I noticed that the temp is not moving upward very well. Thus I interupted my session with the digital world AGAIN, and went to basement to investagate.

And sure enough, unlike the relyable, dependable digital world (ask Bill Gates) the darn furnace in the real(?) world had lost its pilot light. While I was scrambling around looking for a lighter (matches, two sticks???) I had one of those thoughts.

By the time I had returned and lite the pilot, the thoughts were turning themselves into blueprints and scematics inside my head. Within minutes I had total concept, from idea to prototype, and was figuring the virtual beta when I had a blinding flash of reality:

YOU DON'T OVERCLOCK A FURNACE, DUMMIE!

So, any of you ever have one of those thoughts?

What Michigander have you met that's been perfectly right in the head, exactly?

I'd like to overclock my furnace so it's not always freezing in here. More heat per cubic foot of gas? Heck ya!

The few words that put the fear of God into my wife when uttered from my cake hole " I'll have to modify that"

She gets scared a lot. Seems that I have a penchant, much like Tim Taylor, to make things work better than indended ( at least I think I'm making them work better, much like Tim Taylor ).

Fortunately, I don't have access to the tools and supplies like Tim Taylor, or the Emergency Room staff WOULD most likely know my name by heart.

CERuppel, you might wanna watch out to if that things been on but not lit. I'm no furnace technittion, but I do play with the stove and a lighter a lot. I've gotten many a scorched eyebrow from letting the gas go for a while and lighting it FWWOOOOOoommmm!

As for overclocking it, I think your looking at the project upside down. Instead of heating your house quicker which would probably cost you more, how bout heat it BETTER Perhaps we could chrome a few parts, and some fans into the mix, and make it so it works better for the same amount of $$$ or less. What if we were to introduce some low RPM, but big fans into the mix throughout the venting system so that the air is moved quicker through the system so it has to stay on less. You could wire them up so you could control them via switches or something like that so rooms that don't need it might actually have flaps on them that could close or the fan could blow backwards so you don't get all this warm air in that room. Just a thought! Anyone want to take this anyware?
