Volkswagen recall

This was posted in the paper,

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Volkswagen of America Inc. and Audi of America Inc. are recalling about 530,000 vehicles because of faulty ignition coils.

The automakers said Tuesday that the ignition coils "have been experiencing a higher-than-normal failure rate."

The ignition coils provide electricity to the engine's spark plugs during operation. When the coils fail, the check engine light/malfunction indicator lamp blinks, vehicle performance can become rough, and the engine can lose some power.

The automakers plan to replace the coils on all 2001 and 2002 model year cars equipped with certain engines.

Affected cars are equipped with 1.8 liter engines, including the Audi TT and A4 and the Volkswagen Golf/GTI, Jetta, New Beetle and Passat.

The recall also includes vehicles equipped with the Passat W8 engine, and all Volkswagens equipped with the 2.8 liter VR6 and the Audi 3.0 liter V6 engine.

Early production 2003 models also are affected.

"We know that some ignition coils installed in our cars are not up to our high quality standards," Gerd Klauss, president and chief executive of Volkswagen of America said in a statement. "The right thing to do is to fix every single car with these coils by replacing them whether they are broken yet or not."

Customers will be notified about the coil replacements by mail.

Audi and Volkswagen of America parent company Volkswagen said in a statement from its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, that it was recalling roughly 850,000 vehicles worldwide because of the problem. It declined to comment on the cost of the recalls.

Good thing I drive a 1990 Honda Accord. Just runs and runs. Needs only gas, oil change and anti-freeze. Nothing else.

102,000 miles on it and from what I heard its life is like half over.
