NASA, Politics, and Human Tragedy.

There is absolutely no compelling evidence to date that a lack of money was contributory to the latest human tragedy of manned space exploration.

There may have been some factors where money shortages just like a money wasteage at NASA as in any other govt agency impairs peak proficiency. But that has not been shown at this point in time to be the case.

Nothing is "routine" in any space flight. Every astronaut knows that. But blaming the customary "lack of funds" is just as unsupported as blaming the customary "pilot error'.

Throwing money at problems does not always solve them. The picture that emerges so far is that of a freak and tragic accident. There are just too many permutations of error or failure for the human mind to encompass and anticipate.

Yes, half a billion dollars could be put to use at NASA as at any agency. Right now our economy, I believe, is worse off than the, "Official Story" makes it. Money will certainly be welcome in shoring up our technical future, and our present economy.

The questions raised in regard to NASA and manned space-exploration remain now as they did before this tragedy.Sadly, they are essentially the same questions , it would seem.

The problem is, not to many people wanted to deal with them. So a middle ground was struck between advocacy and neglect. NASA had become almost "historical".

After this tragedy is put behind us--as others have been--let us hope some reassessment of the Space Program, its goals, it means, its future can be made.

God bless all those have died advancing human knowledge in aviation. I am old enough to remember the Douglass skyrocket as a kid. And before that six men died trying Lindberg's historic flight of the Atlantic. They indeed had "The Right Stuff".

As long as there are such men and women, the space program will endure. It may have a slowdown here and there, but it remains one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring accomplishments of mankind.

What ever the actual technical cause of the Columbia tragedy, the final result is that we are reminded once again that such awesome achievement can carry a terrible price...and still, we continue to see these men and women stepping forward to advance this program anyway.

God bless 'em!
