I need some mathematical help... (higher level math)

here's the deal. I have come across a couple of problems where I believe that it would make my life easier to be able to square a series. The problem is that I know it's not equivalent to just squaring each term. (I lose the cross terms)

can anyone hlep me out here

The way I interpret this (as does Maple), is that the total of the series is squared.

For example, setting a=2, and having n from 0 to 5, the sum of the series is 78. Squaring of course gives 6084.

You don't mean to square (n+a^n) do you, n^2+2na^n+a^2n? If so, the sum of the series (once again setting a=2, and having n go from 0 to 5) is 15076.

Perhaps if you could tell us what exactly you were doing we could better help you?

(I've been up for twenty hours and math has never been my specialty, get another opinion )

Ahh Maple is a neat program. Of course I don't have the math skills to actually USE Maple.

hehe... sorry it took so long to respond guys... turns out, after doing some research on my own, that there really isn't a very good way to represent it other than the way that I did...

and no ILC, i did not mean the latter of your two suggestions. i meant the former.
