Privacy? You don't need no stinkin' privacy.

It's time for the music industry to re-invent itself. They will not be able to snuff out file sharing. They need to find new ways to make money. I hope Verizon appeals this.

since when is stealing freedom of speech?

I do not like the invasion of privacy. But unless you engage in piracy you probably do not have a huge risk of being peeped on.

Tough call though.

Anyone who downloads music is not safe any longer.

I applaud Verizon for fighting on behalf of it's customers' privacy.

Quote:
Judge John D. Bates of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Tuesday ordered Verizon Internet Services to turn over the name of one of its customers to the Recording Industry Association of America. The ruling is a victory for the record companies in their fight to control how music is downloaded from the Internet.

I applaud Verizon for trying to protect its customers.

I applaud Judge for being fair to business.

I deplore stealing (the taking of someone elses work or property with out permission or payment).

Sorry Epidemic I don't look at this as stealing. I have purchased more CDs after downloading the music than I ever did before I downloaded the music....
How about buying used CD's? Is that stealing too? The record lable or artist doesn't get their cut from that either.

I agree with surreal. They need to adapt to the digital age. I bet if they offered downloads of high quality rips of songs for say 50 cents or even a buck a pop they'd make a ton of money. I would much rather pay a modest charge to download what I know would be a good quality rip rather than take my chances on peer-to-peer. Then I could select the songs I want and not pay $20 for a $0.20 piece of plastic with maybe 2 songs I like.

I am guilty of previewing a movie like planet of the apes before going to it in the movies. However I would gladly give up my right to do that if it would stop piracy. You may be honest about purchasing music after grabbing a song. But I will say most people steal all their music.

How about buying used CD's?

One person loses the use of the CD and another one gains it. I do not have a problem with that. Selling used items is not the same as taking the encyclopedia and zeroxing it and giving out copies.

I agree with you excel on the fact that they should sell it for a buck a song. If they want to miss that business oportunity that is their problem. You could of course try to set up a webserver for doing just that and lay out a business proposal that the record producers will buy into.

Lets say the industry adopts your method and a few hundred buy the songs and then put them up on kazaa and the rest steal them. Is that right? You still need to stop the peer to peer theft.

I know many people with thousands of songs on their PC's Do you believe they would spend thousands of dollars to get the songs? These people burn their own CD's and never purchase anything. The artists are out thousands of dollars for a product which was in demand, that met the requirements of the consumer.

They made a product which was in demand but do not get paid. How would you like to go on an interview and them say to you we love your abilities start working today, at the end of the day say oops go home we do not really want your services and we only pay you if you work the whole week.

What if you wrote a book and the producer took your work and gave you 4 dollars for the paper you wrote it on?
