Find: Politicians. Replace With: AI
I am reading a futuristic novel by Neil Asher called Gridlinked, it's a great story. In the story they have very powerful computers referred to as AI's which govern daily human life among millions of other tasks.
So this got me thinking, wouldn't it be so much better to replace all politicians with AI's? And have them make sane and logical decisions for us? Obviously it would need fine tuning, but you get the general idea si?
Opinions?

Personally I guess intellectuals might like having decisions made for you. Personally I like to make my own decisions.
However I do think that you should watch out for AI making your decisions. When pure logic runs the world that means there is no compassion. No compassion says the sick and the infirm are a drain on the common good. And the no workers are likewise.

| ClubMed, you ought to read Ken MacLeod's novels. They'll give you some idea why you might not want to entrust your lives to the Fast Folk, as he calls AIs. It's not a new idea; Jack Williamson's With Folded Hands, 1947 is an early version, but MacLeod writes well, and his politics (Anarcho-Trotskyist-Libertarian-dot.Communist) are unusual enough to be interesting in themselves.

| Epidemic, intellectuals don't enjoy having decisions made for them. They enjoy having decisions made for other people. (But so do Republicans, Fundamentalists, soccer moms, drivers, ...)

Thanks Theo i'll try to get the novels.
I brought this up because I feel that many conflicts happen due to emotional and religious factors, not to forget power struggles and money. Computers would be lacking in these human traights, this could be a good thing.
One would have to set boundaries and allow these AI's to govern only certain aspects of life, and leave others to humans.
But then we could get rid of the Saddams, Bushs, Rumsfelds, OBL's, Hitlers, Stalin's, Sharon's etc...

I don't know about that. Using logic to deduce I must say that one self proclaimed intellectual has just stated that he wants machines to make decisions for him. It is just a little joke about a previous post.

| Too True... Logic would dictate many things that Human Compassion would not consider.

Oh yea. Logic would also dictate that a threat to the world like saddam would need to be wiped out reguardless of the loss of life. Saddam is a threat to world stability therefore would have to be dealt with quickly to stop the suffering of the millions of people under him. The hit squads and storm troopers that he employs to keep people under controll have probably killed more people than any possible attack by the US that is properly executed.

But thats my point, in a world governed to a great extent by AI's there will be no Saddams or Bushs or Stalins or Hitlers Epidemic.
And as I said, we could set boundaries and not allow these AI's to govern all aspects of life.
