Kids Different jobs

How many different jobs have you had? Some people, like my Dad, spent their entire careers at one company. That's not so common anymore. Myself, I've been a soldier, driver training instructor, asbestos remover, UPS delivery guy, truck driver, warehouseman, geologist, and network administrator.

(I get bored easily.)

Selling farm tractors, selling software, selling financial products.

Wish I could get into PC repair/build/maintenance business for myself. Less $$ but would enjoy working.

Some day.......

I'm still studying so most of the work I do and have done has been student work.

In my teens I worked at mcdonalds during the summer. My better jobs have been working for SGI when they had an office in vienna just helping out with all kinds of things and currently working at the economist intelligence unit, pay is not great, im only doing it to get the name on my CV.

I wouldn't mind a part time job in the web design/art field, I would enjoy that.

Wow, that is tough one.
I have had several jobs but could never keep them long.
Lets see if I can outline my pathtic resume.

Worked at Burger King when I was fifteen.
Wish I knew what I knew now about the stupid button I was told to wear when I worked there. Now I relized it was flat out discrimination. I had to wear a button that said. "I am Deaf, Please speak loudly and clear and slow"

Age 16: I went to Job Corps for 6 months. got booted outta that place because they wanted me to do something and I refused.

Age 18: Work for a local govenment training job thingy. Where I worked to earn my GED 2 hours a day plus worked 6 hours a day doing lots of odd things, brush clearning, brush burning, chopping trees down, collecting firewood, moving river rocks in dry river beds to prepare for better flow during flow season. lots of odd ball things. Fun work tho. Enjoyed it. Also got my GED and Passed

From that job I got discovered by the City of Bend and was hired to work at the city working as a Cemetary Assistance, jobs included, mowing cemetary, weedwacking, burials, digging the holes for burials. Fixing sunken plots. Also operated a small backhoe to dig the holes. Backhoes are fun this was a seasonal job so ended when summer ended.

Did my first year of college in Welding manufacturing. From here I got my first welding job with a cool company in bend, They really liked me and I remember boss chatting with me and asked me what my goals were with college and what type of work with welding I wanted to get into. he said I was going to have a hard time because of liability issues and probaably wouldn't get hired and would have been deemed to working in a shop if I continued this and not making alot of money.

So that led to a change in carrer choices. Damm I loved to weld tho.

Age 19: got hired back on with the City of Bend but this time in thier machcanical shop assisting in maintence of the Citys Firetrucks, cop cars, ambulances. Even convinced the boss to let me tear apart a lawnmower tranny without the manual. they been waiting for a manual for over a month and I said let me mess with it. got that Rebuild using the wrong manual for different model of lawnmower and kept track of how I took it apart and replaced the worn parts and ran like a charm. boss was shocked! Also worked with welding here as well. Completely gutted an old water tanker and repplace parts and fittings to use it as a fire water truck for forest fires. this was a fun job, enjoyed it as well.

then I got stupid and got married.
left for Denver to go to DIT (Denver Intitute of Technology)
Ended up dropping out cuz I couldn't handle things with my marraige and working full time and going to schol full time.

We landed back in Oregon. Worked as a secretary got fired 89 days later. Edit: Got this job through Vocational rehabilitation and this was stupid to begin with because of my hearing and they didn't give a crap. as long as they did thier quota.

took another year before anyone would hire me.
Took a job as a receptionist assistance got fired 60 days later. Edit: I got this job through vocational rehabilitation as they trained me for it. was stupid on thier part again.

Both cause of my hearing. I sued the one company but after 3 years I said the F word and dropped the lawsuit and went on iwth my life and chalked it up as an experience. Couldn't handle the stess of it anymore.

So then I go to work for my parents. this was a chaning point. I learned Accounting, Inventory Control and Auditing of financies, employees sales habits and such, ended up saving the company tons of money that was beuing ripped off from vendors. Treuly enjoyed my work here but didn't get along with my father.

then left for ND worked as a assistance to Insurance sales.
Lost that job after 9 months.
Move to wyoming. worked at a temp aency for 3 months. Couldn't find a job after this. So Taxes came back and whooo hooo, I was finally able to pay off my student loans. Paid those off and started going to college.

and that is where I am at 6 years later, still going to college.
Do I stress of looking for work? Yes because I know for a fact that i have such hard time keeping jobs. Keep getting fired for one reason or another. It petrifies me to look for a job and doesn't matter how meanial it is.

So now I am okay because im still going to college and i work at my boyfriends shop so I don't antisipate having to look for a job in the near future. My goals now are to be self employeed where no one can fire me. its either I get business or I don't.

I have a thread from way back called Getting Hired after graduation, it sorta outlines some of my fears upon graduating. I hope to start my own small part time business from home so who knows. we can never tell what life is going to dish us later. So I just take it oen day at a time and just finish on thing and that is to graduate. Sooooo anyways my job history is pretty pathtic, I know I would never get hired for decent pay at this time if I were to try. Decent pay to me is 8 dollars an hour or more.

anyways, sorry this was so long. just sobering going back and looking at this. The funnest jobs of them all where Working for the City and also working at my parents business. Just was unfortunate that my father and I didn't see eye to eye on business matters. What pissed me off is after I left he implimented all my suggestions.

We get along great now.

I hope I am not being insensitive, I don’t intend to be. But isn't it a good idea to let people know that you are deaf? Is deaf an insult?

Or would you rather have to spend 3-4 minutes explaining to every single customer that you are deaf and cannot hear them very well if they don't talk loud enough?

One of my best friends has cerebral palsy, he has an ID card that identifies him as handicapped. He uses it for privileged parking, discounts at cinemas and theatres etc..

Is that discrimination too?
Should we all pretend he is ‘healthy’ when he can’t even have a sip of his coke without having someone lift the cup to his mouth just so we don’t dare mention that he is in some way handicapped?

Sorry for my response, but I grew up with one of my best friends being handicapped, and it makes me feel good to see that he, unlike others, can walk through life with pride and strength but above all honesty, to himself.

He doesn’t pretend that he is not handicapped, nor does he try to ignore this fact or hide it, he makes the best of what God has given him, and I have nothing but respect for him and people like him.

Ok, fire away

Hi Clubmed.

Hmmm would you like to start a new thread on this discussion. Cuz I have typed up my response a few times and only to cut and paste it to notepad. Why? cuz I feel like I'd be thread crapping. would you like to start a new thread? LMK and I will.
