DVD/VCR Combo or not?
My sister gave us some BB gift cards and they're starting to burn a hole in my pocket.
I've had this idea for getting a DVD/VCR combo for a while. Our VCR is several years old and not very good quality and we have no DVD player (I'm tired of watching great movies on a 17" monitor).
But now that I'm really looking at the user reviews and information on how you hook these things up, I'm having second thoughts. Anyone care to share your experience in this regard, good or bad?

I am a person you do not know. I think you should just get a regular DVD player.

Well...
do you own/rent VCR movies still?
if so then try the combo out then.
If not I would just buy a DVD player.

Yes, we have a full cabinet of tapes (not that we ever watch them) so we need a VCR. Besides, how would my mom tape all sorts of who-knows-what reruns at night without a VCR?
Actually, I forgot, I don't know you osprey4!!!

I have two of them, a high end one I got at BB and a low end one I got at wally world. Both work quite well and I am happy with them. I have lots of tapes collected over the years and am now starting to buy DVD's. It's nice to have one machine to take both medias. I say get one. btw, I have the samsung in the living room and the emerson in the bedroom.

I bought the wife one for Christmas. Our VCR's recent, but she wanted a DVD. (She's the TV watcher here)
She's somewhat...technologically challenged.
Went with the combo unit for the sake of simplicity. She doesn't have to worry about controlling an additional unit this way. Plus, it's less cluttered looking, and there were no additional cables needed or connection issues to deal with.
Took 5 minutes to chsnge from VCR to this. And of course, we've still got the VCR to use eldewhere.
My question - if you need both, why on earth would you not buy a combo??

PSU2Fan, thanks for those ratings links.
Ed_S, how do you connect your player to the TV? I was looking at the on-line manual for a Samsung last night compared to our TV and it looks complicated. It seems you need S-video to the TV for the DVD player, then composite video for the VHS, then L/R audio, then coax for the TV signal through the VHS to TV. Is that correct?
