Sever autistic kids may be trapped. but not with out hope.

I just saw an interesting segment on 60 minutes 2

There is a woman in india who decided not to listen to the doctors and experts and she has cracked the secret for communicating with her child.

He now writes poetry and has surprising language skills.

Apparently even though the ability to express themselves is broken they have fully functioning brains. in many cases they even know how to spell and have questions which need answering.

This post is for my techimo bud I hope this helps.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/...in536416.shtml

Just to add to the story the woman has not only been able to do it with her son but with severly autistic children from other families.

It sounds promising for many autistic children not for just a few extreme cases. I think that they kinda implied that it may even be the norm rather than the exception.

Just thought I would pass it on.

Epi, I want to thank you.I have an autistic son, and though he isn't severe, and can function, and speak, he is 9,and still can't read or write. His social skills are a age 5-6 level, and he gets very frustrated knowing he is behind.
I can see there is hope, and I want to look into this more in depth. But seeing that he will be able to read would be a great day for me and mom
At this point every peice of info is very helpful, specially a success story

Thanks Epidemic!

I totally agree with you BC, my 5 yr old is autistic and he and I both get very frustrated when he's not able to convey what's on his mind into words for me sometimes. He strikes out a lot and I would say that at least 3 of his 5 school reports a week indicate that he's hitting/biting/scratching the Special Ed. teachers when he doesn't want to do something he's told to do. He's writing his numbers/letters just fine (and he's even began drawing people/houses/cars & trucks ), but he can't even begin to read yet.

I hope and pray that he'll be able to function as a "normal" kid soon and this story certainly brightens the light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks again buddy, it felt great to read such a story...

Mike

I think what is kinda most interesting about this is that it flies in the face of all the current teaching methods.

It is aggressive rather than passive. I wonder how well it works on mild to medium autism. Does it work with them as well?

Wonderful news
I hope they really can apply it to all autistic children. They'll get an initial reaction from this group, and hopefully start teaching special ed teachers around the country (initially) how to work with it

Excellent reading Epi!

I saw the show and if you check the time I had it posted about 5 minutes later. It sounded exciting to me for people I have met here. This coupled with the pressure devices which seem to hold promise perhaps we can give these families some hope.
