WHAT THE HELL IS..

What on earth is Direct Democracy? I asked my teacher, mom, sister, brother, and even some of my friends. They all said the same thing "it's democracy that is direct." Now I know that's not it; at all.

The reason I would like to know is because my teacher (not the same one) gave me an assignment that is due tommorow. I have to write a one page assignment describing what it is,prove several examples of direct democracy, and explain it's streanght's and weaknesses. Heh' I know that's a lot, so all I'm asking is what it is and where it's been used? I don't need a paragraph or anything. All I need is something to give me a boost on this assingment. Thank's.

Well, I never heard of it, but Google has!

Try this for starters, and if you need more do a Google on "direct democracy" (quotes included).

Hope it helps

Cheers
Mick

I don't know whether it's the same, but there it could be direct/indirect democracy.

Indirect meaning, someone is presenting the people on whatever it is, usually congress or something. This way, voting is minimized and decisions can be made more easily.

Direct meaning, everything that needs a decision gets peoples vote. There are no representatives.

Direct Democracy is the only true democracy. All it means is everybody votes on everything.

No elected Congress or Senate to represent us. No state representatives, no governers, no mayors, no council members, etc. These figureheads would all no longer be needed. And all the decisions they all make for their little corners of our government would then have to voted on by the people of the nation.

Like I said, everybody votes on everything.

In theory it's got the upside of every single citizen would have an equal voice. Every vote would count. Corruption would be extremely difficult at best because there are not figureheads to be corrupted.

But in reality it's simply not feasible. There are literally not enough hours in each day for something like that to work. There are SO MANY issues at SO MANY levels to be dealt with/voted on/funded/overseen/reported on/studied/etc. etc. The citizens of the country wouldn't even have enough time to simply vote on everything that needs to be voted on. Then there's the whole aspect of them actually needing to study up on things so can at least understand what they are voting on.

Hell, nobody would have the time to go to work.

Even though with todays technology it probably is doable to wire up every household in the country so everyone could vote...but even if that were done, the system just isn't feasible with a country any larger than a typical neighborhood.

And I think it wouldn't take long before local leader-types starting organizing groups with common ideas and slowly but surely we'd end up back right where we are now.

There are a number of forms of democracy, direct democracy is one of them. I would use google and an ecyclopaedia.

Maybe a dictionary of political thought would be helpful too. I have a number of such books and they are great.
