I have seen saturn!!!

For x-mas me mom and dad gave me a telescope.

Upon careful evaluation of the sky I picked a white light and spent forever trying to focus on it. After a while I noticed unlike the other little lights this one kept getting bigger as I changed lenses. low and behold the little light had a ring around it.

I am now an astronaut or something.

I have also seen juniper (ref I dream of genie)

all in all I find it mildly interesting surveying the heavens but I do not think I could find too many hours of enjoyment doing it unless I had the hubble as my toy. I am just too product oriented.

Ancient astronomers must have been a different breed. I mean to look at the sky and notice that 4 or 5 stars move at different rates from the 4000 visable to the naked eye is quite a feat.

what I do find amazing though is the hugeocity of space.

Actually, Epidemic, it wasn't such a feat that the naked eye planets were picked out of the rest and noticed to move erratically, according to the other stars. They are the brightest objects in the sky, next to the sun and moon. It is actually a good thing, as amateur astronomers who know extremely little can simply find the brightest object (especially this time of year) and have it be Jupiter. A few degrees away you will find Saturn.

You can truly appreciate their beauty when you have been outside away from light for a while with your telescope.

Do you have a constellation book or any star map? It will greatly assist you if you do go in search of any deep sky objects or want to definitively track down all the planets.

I use my 4&#189" reflector to do all my viewing. I don't have any of my old refractors anymore. The only problem is once you get into it, your scope is never big enough.

Since we are in winter, if you want to find some neat stuff to look at, if you get sick of watching Jupiter and it's moons or cartoonish Saturn, scan the field of Orions sword that he has stuffed in his belt. Good stuff in there!
You might want to aim your scope at the Pleiades and see just how many sisters are in that little patch...
