Don't suppose you know any of the people that are part of these militant/religious/terrorist groups. They don't recruit stupid people for these things. They look for people who are willing, but during training they "weed out" all the stupid ones. So, it is very likely that many of the people who perpetrate these atrocities are quite intelligent, or atleast comparable to any person on this board.
Of course, some of the suicide bombers are just brainwashed through some form of sensory deprivation, and then trained for one specific thing: to go some place with a bomb strapped to their chest and press the button. So these people don't have to be smart, but of course they very well might be. So some of these people could just be kidnapped and brainwashed, some could be volunteers, and the rest are just willing to do anything to ensure a place in whatever form of afterlife they believe in.
The people who live in these middle-eastern countries really don't have access to mass media, and those who do are convinced (whether by subtle brainwashing made possibly by a series of suggestions or simply get convinced) that it is not true and is some form of propaganda.
It's unfortunate that the Western countries won't just come right out and say why they care so much about the Middle East: oil. I mean, of course there's the whole nuclear factor, and just the general fear of being blown up. If the president or somebody would just say this, i don't think these militant groups would be getting so many people who are willing to blindly follow their commands. Damn propaganda.
Our war against Iraq isn't even really against the country, but simply the leader and his loyal followers. He is a very maniacal guy, and could launch full-out war at any time on any other country... but of course the whole country would be completely obliterated within an hour of his launching, which is why he doesn't. The world in which we live is a very precarious place.
