It all depends on the application. If it's for some subs or bass drivers, then yes, the heavier box will sound better. But it doesn't really make sense to have a heavy box for some horns.

You are correct, Willy. Horns function just fine on their own.

BUT....BC has been talking about 15" JBL woofers, however.

Serious consideration needed on cabinet design, here.

TT, I had my hands on one of those Peavey Classic 30s for a good while. You're right about the sound. They'll give a Fender a run for its money (but mostly because the specs and circuitry are identical).

I assume you're talking about this little number here? http://www.carvin.com/cgi-bin/Isearc...P2=VE212&P1=SX
I don't have any experience with that cabinet, but my roommate has the 4x12 (non Legacy) and Mike from my old band also had a Carvin 4x12. I think they sound great. My roommate uses a Legacy head for power. He runs his POD right into the power amp, bypassing all the pre-amp stuff. Legacy heads themselves aren't that great sounding to me (or him), but they're power section is very clean for all tube. I would recommend Carvin cabinets to anyone.

My JBL cabinets are constructed entirely of 3/4" plywood with internal bracing. They are ported on the bottom. And every seam was glued. In order to get to the internals, you have to take the speaker out. They sound really great, but look really bad. They perform well as a sub cabinet, and as a mid-range cabinet. I love JBLs, but I'd never buy them again.

Not really meant for live music performance, but good cabinet designs nonetheless. Also, there were some really good links in the posts at the bottom.

Whir, I was considering one of the non-Legacy 2 x 12's. I just didn't know if they were open or closed-back. I'm looking for closed-back for the extra "chug". That Prosonic was advertised as a cross between a vclassic Fender and a flamethrower, and that's about right the 2 x 10's are amazing, but an added 2 x 12 for outside stuff could sterilize small animals....

Oh, I have some JBL 15's I built with some direct help from JBL on the enclosure dimensions and porting. 3/4" baltic birch ply on the back and sides, 1" on the baffle board. They go far enough up into the mids to be able to use a bi-radial tweeter and no mid driver, and are flat down to 40 Hz (Low E on a bass). I love's 'em and they sound very accurate before you even mess with any EQ. Any final EQ is just to accomodate the venue they're in.

Oh and with the birch ply, they're still light enough for a skinny old codger like me to lift by myself
