Military Service
I found this on Fark: http://www.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/...ary/index.html
The jist is that if congress had its children in service (active, not reserves) they would not be so eager to go to war.
I have a similar view. I believe that service should be required for public office. Notice I say service, not nessacarily military. But don't give the canidate much control over the service. Use the nations needs and the canidates abilities to determine the service.
The idea (mine) is that the public office holders have the fact of responsability and discipline in thier history.
Sorry for the rant, but the current state of affairs busts my gut (draft dodgers and 'reservists' in charge of the military...)
Anyway, what are your views?

I'm pretty sure if they had to be in the service, they'ld be pushing paper, far out of the reach of the bad guys.

I'm all for reinstate the draft. The only thing I dont' like about the draft is some rich boys can get away with this which is totally **DELETED** because poor boys have to do all the dirty work when all the rich boys are back in state **DELETED** while all the poor boys are dying.
I'm also vote for women should be draft along side with men and I don't mean like draft to become a nurse but draft to fight just like the men. Time to put up ladies. You been asking for too much equality and opportunity and here is your chance. Please do not use profane or sexually oriented language on these boards, as they are not welcome here. Please read over the FAQ if you have any further questions about proper conduct here.

Greasy B,
I agree about the draft! As long as we're going to be putting our noses into everybody's business in this world, we're going to need the "bodies" to back it up. The National Guard was never meant to be a stopgap, and these call ups can last for a long long time. Every kid male/female, should register at 18 and get called for 18 to 24 months and then be given the good old G.I. bill!!!! You'd be surprised how just how much of a man/woman that experience will make out of someone. Not to mention the great relief of the parents who're trying to figure out a way to get their kids to leave the nest! |

I am absolutely totally against a draft!
that's my view.
I think that we are strong enough to take care of business with all of the wonderful men and women that choose to enlist.
Let it be a choice! THAT is what America is about!!!!
((and forget the bs about the powers that be, that if the senator and reps have a personal issue, heck WE ALL have a personal stake in our country! ))

There are alot of people who shouldn't even be considered for the Armed Forces. That's why they have psychological testing when you sign up or get drafted. There were plenty in when I was in the Navy that should have been left on the beach. But there are many other ways that these people could serve our country and be credited for service time but ,I feel , most would chicken out and rather be served than participate as a good citizen should.

Ok Sweet, I respect your views, I really do. I'd like to know how old you are because you could have a vested interest in not being drafted! But whats wrong with people being drafted for national service? How about 18 to 24 months working in a sort of civilian corps on the home front?! Whats wrong with serving your country in any capacity? Why rely on young kids who can't get a job after H.S. ? I'm only just beginning. I think I'll start a thread devoted specifically to the draft.

Remember Vietnam? But the draft is definitely needed

Ya'll miss the obvious. All the rich politicians kids will be in college(pretty much exempt) or national guard anyway.
We can't draft every 18 year old kid into the military! This whole thing was brought up by Charles Rangel.
Although I do think it would be good for a lot of the kids to have some military discipline or some sort of discipline.LOL
I sent my Selective Service card in when I was 18 but they never called.

Hold on. Most of you seem to have missed my little 'twist' on this.
No draft. But if you ever want to hold public office you serve. NOT national gaurd. Not 'protected' status. You serve active duty of one full term in the military.
With that in mind, take a look at congress. Look at the joint chiefs of staff. Look at the pres...
You get the idea.
Now just think if those same offices were filled with men and women that had had to serve. That knew first hand the cost. And resposablity. Duty. You listening W?
Yes this one ticks me off. A draft dodger serving as head of our armed forces...
