Smoked Network
Well, Christmas eve brought more than Santa Claus here. Mother Nature decided that I should spend more time with my family this Christmas and sent a lightning bolt that took out my modem , router, three nic cards ( I Hope not the Mbds) a TV and 2 VCR's.
Wound up having the best Christmas ever so all was not lost.
Was able to salvage the VCR's but had to get new network components Only about $250.00 to fix it all. Life goes on........

Well glad it only took out networking equipment and not people
Equipment damage tends to be preferred over people damage

aw man, sorry to hear that. Hope you invest in a UPS, they are great, and you can hook up your network to it (just to protect for a power surge) and the manufacturor will pay for your stuff if it gets damaged
I got one from Belkin and I get $100,000+ coverage from damages |

Is there such a thing as a surge protector for cable? I have everything else protected, but my cable comes straight out of the wall into my modem. Could a surge fry the network that way?

it sounds like maybe the surge came in thru the cablemodem(?). if so, i don't think the ups 'damage coverage' would apply.
my sympathies...
but you've got the right attitude. hardware can be replaced...people can't.

I found a cable modem surge supressor from APC. It's cheap, and if you believe you get what you pay for maybe that's not a good thing, but APC usually makes decent stuff, so...
