Talk Man am I beat!

Well, the Xeroid is tired. My son was filling up his 10gig hard drive on his PC. He had me order him a new Maxtor HD and install it yesterday.

I was tempted to make it a secondary HD to the original 10gig drive but things were getting kind of dicey so I figured a fresh install was in order. So, I installed the new Maxtor as Primary and partitioned and formatted it.

Then I started installing software. I never realized my kids had accumulated so many pieces of software. Learning games, first person shooters, MS Office, Corel Draw, Print Shop, Kodak Camera software, to name a few. Then there was Norton Antivirus, Winzip, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and Quicktime to install. Win98 updates to download, MS Internet Explorer to upgrade, Media Player to upgrade, etc. I didn't realize what a pain it had become to patch and bring a Win98 install up to date.

Whew! I counted it up when I had finished and I had installed 51 seperate pieces of software. Well, I'm finished now and boy am I tired. Now to format the 10gig HD and install it.

Mike

And you have to keep track of all the CD keys and user names, the updates.......

That's why I set up my XP Pro system just so and then imaged the drive and put the image on a separate drive and partition. And burnt the 4GB image to a DVD just in case ( my wife says I am paranoid; I says I is careful).

No one messes with my PC. The boys have theirs and when they wanna mess they first try out the new games or whatever on the spare PC kept just to try out stuff.

This way my WindowsXP has run non-stop since January 2002 except for times I have to reboot after installing updates/upgrades or once when the storm knocked the lights out for 2 seconds.

Same here. I set up the kids PC from parts left over from my previous builds. Now my PC performs flawlessly.

The wife and kids won't go near my PC since I installed Linux. If you let the lilo time out it defaults to Mandrake and they won't go near Mandrake. They don't even like my XP partition but would rather stick with 98 on their PC.
