Lord of the Rings....Observation
Well I received the DVD today from my sister and couldn't wait to watch it. Anyways, I just finished the movie, which by the way was awesome (can't wait to go see TWO Towers this weekend), and being an old Everquest junkie, couldn't help but notice the very large similarities between the game and the movie. The town names, the races, even the Mithril armor are all shared by both. So, is it just me, or were the creators of Everquest LOR book junkies??

Happy, Mike?????

I dont remember Mythril being so dang strong tho!! I always knew it was excellent and light-weight but able to stop a spear being thrust by a troll? pffft..hard to believe if ya ask me. But it doesn't matter...the movie is fantastic anyway

my only problem was they left you hanging right when the story was getting good. all the build up of the quest to destroy the ring and when they get halfway there they end the movie.
true it was the "fellowship of the ring" and the fellowship more or less fell apart but geez to leave it there? AAAGGHHH!!!!! thank goodness I have read the books and know the story.
I'll have to make my wife watch "the fellowship" and see if she likes it before I even think about taking her to see "the two towers".

LOTR was an inspiration for many people.
Including the Dungeons & Dragons creators.

| Exactly, LOTR basically set the stage for many if not all fantasy style RPG games. Here is a timliine of virtual worlds that I just found, kinda shows you the evolution. http://www.legendmud.org/raph/gaming/mudtimeline.html

But it doesn't matter...the movie is fantastic anyway | Yeah, I was thinking that even if the spear didn't penetrate, that strong of a blow would have crushed his rib cage and lungs. Kinda like a kevlar vest- the bullet doesn't penetrate, but it will break ribs and knock you on your rear.
I thought the movie was pretty good, but was too much run-fight-run-fight-run-fight-run-fight on and on. There was always a bigger, badder guy around the corner that they had to fight when they got away from what they were fighting currently. I would like to have seen more plot, but I guess you can only do so much in 3 hours.

| Have you read the books? I need to read it again myself (My sister loaned me the set when I was about 14.)
The first movie was basiclly an introduction to the world of middle earth and the main charactors. We are just at the beginning of this tale. They also cut close to an hour out of the first movie (available in the box set.)

Yeah, I have read the books. IMO, they aren't written very well. They tell a great story, but they read 'clunky' and don't flow well. I'd like to see Timothy Zahn or Mike Stackpole tell the same story. (One does not read books written by them. You simply hold the book and the book reads itself, making you wonder where 2-3 hours went. )
I know they have to introduce everything, but also think they could've put more plot in than they did. They told the basics of what happened in the book; the history and minor points are much harder to translate to the screen though. (The only movies I've seen that are better than the books IMO is Hunt for Red October and Jurassic Pork.) I haven't seen the DVD edition of LOTR though. It's an entertaining movie alright, but it had the potential to be one of the best.
