The Athlon taps thread
I crushed my first core today.
My poor little ARGA core 1000 mhz 266 FSB Athlon thunderbird, I barely knew yeh. A tiny little piece of the corner gone, and no POST now.
I got one of those watercooling kits from computergeeks.com, and I spent all afternoon setting it up, testing for leaks, etc. The time finally came to drop the mainboard and processor back in and hook up the waterblock. It posted up and sat trying to detect the IDE (I hadn't hook any up yet, it was just a test to make sure it wasn't going to burn or I hadn't crushed it) and all of a sudden the screen went black. Completely dead, no fans even spun when I hit the power button, but then in my rush to yank the water block off to see what had happened, I chipped the core, because it turns out I just hadn't pushed the ATX connector all the way on.
It's all over now.
Peace.
Sam

Reminds me of when I got my Athlon 1.4ghz. I cracked the core the first day I had it. I was really angry. The thermal sensor in the middle of the socket was sticking out too far so the cpu didn't lay flat on the socket. Resulted in a cracked core. Luckily the place I got it from took it back and sent me a new one. No questions asked.

woe, with canned air? damn. and I was thinking on firing up my compressor to blowout the dust bunnies in my case once in a while. well, maybe if I control the air pressure
so how did you do it Socalgal?
I guess I'm lucky that I hadn't crushed a core yet |

Do not tilt canned air upside down and shoot it at a motherboard whilst it is powered. Bad Things™ will happen. :P (Same goes for the insides of monitors. Don't ask.)

I myself have sent a couple durons the there untimly deaths. Ihe latest being a 750 that ran at 900mhz without breaking a sweat.(it also seems to have taken the asus a7v with it.) The first one still bothers me though. It was a duron 650 that would run at 950! A 300 mhz overclock with cheap cooling. I just had to try for more, and killed it. (I still wonder what I could have got out of it with better cooling.)
I really wish these cores were more durable. you take every precaution in the world and it's still like doing open heart surgery. One little slip and the patient is dead.
What really sucks for me is I ordered a new motherboard and it was bad, sent it back and the replacement was bad also. I will never order another ECS K7S5A even though I have built a few others that work fine. ( I'm using one at this very moment to type this.)
one thing to learn from this, never rush or work on your computer when your tired.
Or should I have said go slow when trying to make your computer go faster.
