Kentucky RELEASES 567 Prisoners to Save Money !

Hmmm...why not lay off the Police, Courts, and Paroll Officers ?
Would save more money. Estimated $1.3 Million for the three more months (?) they would be in.

Anybody live in Kentucky ?

Hope they don't steal the Kentucky Derby !
I hate to joke about this --but what can you say about an act that demoralizes Police Officers, moves the burden of cost to the victim etc.

I think I wrote this before--but I have very few illusions about jail acting as a deterrance. Yes, a lot of crime is committed by drug addicts.Yes, reducing drug addiction is cost effective--and humane.

Problem is, nobody has figured out how to do that with high success with people who want to kick habits, let alone those who don't. Look how many times Daryl Strawberry has been in trouble due to drug abuse.

And he's had the best drug treatment money can buy and usually appears to want to kick drugs. Most drug treating programs are a joke. Five days in one I worked in for a year.

The point I was getting to:

Deterance is one side of Justice. The other is Retribution.

So like a bad joke--or a School District cutting the Football Team rather than the Library--because more people will notice, Kentucky's Gov't announces a mass prisoner release. Can't thre get that point across another way ?

I'd be interested to know what "kind" of convicts they're releasing; that is, are they turning murderers and rapists loose (highly doubtful) or guys who got caught with a couple oz. of Pot?

I'm sure they'd never turn the felony stock traders back onto the populace--would they?

"Non -violant" criminals allegedly....like burglers, car thieves etc.

Of course anybody in a crime can turn violant.

Hmmm... Southern California might uplift their spirits with its wonderful climate

Huh ? Woudn't it have been smart to give them one way bus tickets to wherever they want to go as a condition of release ?

I guess in some Nabes in LA, they would be a neighborhood improvement... Let's run it by the Guv, Knoto ! Hey ! Whatever happened to Guv. Moonbeam ?

You're not by any chance....

I got it watching CNN news on the Tele. But if you google CNN, you'll eventually arrive at da News (rather quickly) and maybe there is a news article there. Sometimes they show up at different times/days I've noticed.

There is also a search box. I looked earlier for the Clinton stuff quoted in the NY Daily News, but it wasn't there. Post it if you find either, please.......I'm too burned-out right now.

Over and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

FRANKFORT, Ky. (December 18, 7:26 p.m. AST) - Jail and prison doors swung open Wednesday for the first of hundreds of low-level felons whom Gov. Paul Patton ordered freed for budget reasons.
Patton's "conditional commutation" covered 567 prisoners, all described as nonviolent, Class D offenders who, on average, were within 80 days of completing their sentences.

"Thanks, governor," said Charles Knott, carrying his belongings in a cardboard box as he left the Hardin County jail, about 50 miles south of Louisville.

Knott was released 72 days early on a sentence he was serving for failing to pay thousands in child support, The News-Enterprise of Elizabethtown reported. He vowed he is a changed man.

"I'm going home right now and taking care of my family," he told the newspaper.

Of the total, 363 were scheduled for release Wednesday and the rest on Friday. The majority are in jails. However, the Department of Corrections said at least 90 might simply be swapping one cell for another because they have charges pending against them in other counties or states.

Patton's order was part of a plan to avert a $6 million deficit in the corrections budget. The order was intended to cut the number of state prisoners in county jails to 3,736.

Most of those being released were drug traffickers, drug users or thieves. Patton excluded sex offenders, four-time drunken drivers and those deemed to be violent or seriously mentally ill.

"The frustrating thing to me is trying to balance the budget by letting inmates out on the street," said Daviess County jailer Harold Taylor. "We know they're going to be back, there's no question about that."

The mass release will cost jailers money. Counties depend on the money they get from the state - $28.76 per inmate per day - for holding state prisoners.

In Warren County, jailer Jackie Strode said the early release of 19 inmates there would cost the county $38,000

"This will be a nice early Christmas present," Toya Gardner told the Elizabethtown paper as she waited for the release of her brother, who had been in jail for more than a year for violating his probation on a drug offense.

Anthony Gardner lit a cigar the moment he stepped outside.

"I won't be back," he said as he headed to his sister's car.
Not quite as earth-shattering as headlines would have you believe, but...

I just drove by the track where the KY Derby is held (Churchill Downs) and the National Guard is already in formation around the area. MegalosSkylaki you can rest easier now...

This is not as big of a deal as the press is making it out to be. A large amount of these guys are going to serve time in other prisons because they have other charges against them. Many more of these guys are more so creeps for not paying child support and are no real threat to society.

I am not scared. Of course if I disappear from this forum you will know why...
