It is better for the party and better for the Senate that he has stepped down. Although the allegations are false, it is a black mark on the Senate to have its leader with questions of racism hanging in the air. I also think another reason why a lot of republicans jumped on the bandwagon was because of Lott's weak leadership. He's caved to a lot of democrat opposition over the years without putting up so much as a fight. Whenever Daschle would get on the screen bashing this or that about republican agendas, Lott rarely found a reporter and defended his stances. And his refusal to allow a lot of testimony of Clinton's impeachment trial made it look like a sham. Even though he was guilty, I don't think there would have been a conviction. But at least it wouldn't have appeared to be simply a partisan ploy. Lott was finally coming around too, and was beginning to stand up to the moderates trying to flex their muscle. It's really a big disappointment.
I hope Frist gets the position, and I also hope that weenie Lincoln Chafee doesn't get bribed by the dems like Jeffords did with a committee chairmanship or ranking member status. Daschle was an illegitimate majority leader, and he's going out the door too. I think a change to good conservative leadership might actually be refreshing step for the GOP.
