Favorite Drummer

Not trying to take anything away form all of the guitar players out there, but I was wondering who is your all time favorite drummer.

Mine is Dave Lombardo from Slayer.

This guy can kick in the double bass at the drop of a hat. I just listened to In a godda da vida remake by slayer. This guy kicks major @ss.
My second favorite drummer is Charlie Benante from Anthrax.

I also found a pretty good page for those drummers out there.

P.S. you will need real player to listen to clips

Ginger Baker (Cream) ...one of the most inventive and passionate drum virtuosos who ever lived...this guy showed an entire generation what drums could do. Sadly, his lesson was not heard (he's giving lessons in the San Fernando valley for peanuts. Yeesh!) He is the spiritual Godson of...

Gene Krupa (40's and 50's jazz legend...) this guy taught the "hep" world that drums were not just rhythm tools, but entire instruments of tonal expression all by themselves!

Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones) not a flashy drummer at all, but his application and precision is PERFECT. There's just something amazing about a white guy whose rhythm is absolutely PERFECT.

Just three, for example.

I thrive on Classic Rock so here is my pick

JOHN BONHAM - Led Zeppelin

Neil Peart- Rush

Keith Moon - Who

Joe Allen - Def Leppard (one arm too)

Phil Collins - How many drummers can sing and pound?

Animal - The Muppets (my first favorite)

Neil Pert (Rush) The guy has the fastest hands in rock and roll IMO.

Bobby Blotzer(Ratt) Just because his drums sounds so Phat, and solid

And the original drummer for Ted Nugent (Tommy Clufetos ???) I love the way he entered the song Stranglehold

Lord knows there are tons of others I admire as well. LIke the one from Yes,38 special (2 drummers playing the same line at the same time together )ZZ TOP,Artimus Pyle,I'll stop now

The band is only as good as the botttom line, and these guys held that line well, IMO

Drummers take something away from guitar players? How could that ever happen?

As long as they can keep a beat, who cares?

Joke: What are those people called that you always see hanging around musicians? You see them following musicians around from show to show, always trying to be their friends.

No, not groupies.....drummers!

(Of course I mean all this in a good way.)

Shoot you guys are right..... Keith Moon, and Neil Pert.

Keith Moon (the Who) a fellow Leo, one of the most manic drummers that ever broke a foot pedal. Not the most precise drum player, but you couldn't fault his energy! His work on the 'Who' album Tommy was worth the price of admission. God bless you Keith.

Neil Pert (Rush) a major "go-to" drummer for anybody who like Rock drumming....seriously inventive drum work, not to mention amazing pyrotechnics!!

Well, Im a lead guitar player but Ill freely admit that drums are where its at as far as the sound of a band goes. if the drums aint right, nothing else can fix it.

Ill list 4 drummers.

1) John Bonham...killer feel, inventive, natural..."In my time of dying" is a drum clinic...sometmes when I hear Zep I start laughing cuz the drums are so good. Jimmy Page's rhythm playing has been described as "loose/tight" and the whole band was sort of elastic...live sometimes it kinda got weird like on the Song Remains the Same video where Robert Plant came in on Stairways first line wayyyyyyyy behind the beat....IMO thats a little TOO elastic. It seems that if one or two guys are going to play with the time a little, then the other guys should play really straight on that song...thats why Charlie Watts works so good with keith.

2) Vinnie Apiece (sp?)...based on his drumming on the early 80's album "HolyDiver" by Ronnie james Dio. One of the most driving rock albums ever...dont know that I ever heard anything else Vinnie did although I did like his brother Carmine's work in BlueMurder. "holy Diver" is one of those albums that make you want to drive fast...even in a tercel your trying to get it to 90mph somehow!

3) Jimmy D'anda...drummer for the 80's rock band "BulletBoys". dude just knew how to groove and they produced it loose like early VanHalen. 2nd album was so loose it was almost like a demo feel but he was a monster....saw them in clubs twice, I remember second time dude broke a lot of sticks....the band was loose to the point where the made a few mistakes, but nothing major, they laughed it off and it was a killer show...lots of groove.

4) Alex VanHalen...killer natural feel, pretty original IMO...kinda like his brother as far as having his own sense of timing.

never really got into neil peart too much...only like some of rushs songs and nothing in the last 15 years.

Agree that Charlie Watta is killer also, he's perfect for the stones since he plays it straight up..and the way keith and Ron play everywhere EXCEPT on the beat if the drummer varied a little it would fall apart..as it is it gets that elastic groove but still tight.

Now if they could just get rid of that guy singing Didn't/don't like the stones, yuk!

Bohnam - Whole Lotta Love has a nice solo in it.

Jimmy Chamberlin of the Smashing Pumpkins

Danny Carey of Tool

I'm also a big fan of Chuck Behler, but I've played a gig with him so I'm kind of biased. Not that anyone knows what band Chuck was in.
