Hail Creek. Central QLD.
[In our district]

New Coal Mine coming on line next year.
Published an Application Form this week.

Thought you might be interested.
Hail Ck Application

Me, I'd like to know the answers to the questions on page 3.

1. Give an example of a safety iniative that you have implemented, or have been involved with implementing, at your workplace/ organisation:

2. If employed at Hail Creek Coal, what would you do to make it an injury free workplace?

3. Please tell us how you contribute to a team with whom you have worked?

4. What work practices employed at your current or previous workplace would you NOT like to see at Hail Creek Coal

5. Community Roles.

6. How do you handle shift work?
[ this mine will run 12 hr shifts continuous]

So, how did you go so far folks?

Remember, this is an application form to drive a truck 12 hrs a day.

But address the selection criteria!

This is a pretty wacked out employer. The sad thing is that they will probably have people lined up to work. I wonder if the pay is any good?

Why would they ask this?

"A person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Yes - NO"

Most mine work is great pay!

I got a mate, brilliant bloke but to be truthful to him he is as thick as two planks.

He is earning 51,000 a year digging holes.

He is happy as larry!

Try answering it with, oh, say...

"I have an even temper, and have never intentionally killed anybody on a worksite."

Over here, the mining application is very simple. They just want to know one thing:

"Who are you?"

And I got a 78% on that one!

Gov'mint requires it.

They have set quotas for employers over certain sizes to have a pecentage of Aborginal employees. It's a standard question on application forms nowadays.

Ya know, those questions are all asked by my employer as well. But they DO have very specific selection criteria - that's the big difference.

Big Corporations make poor employers, mostly. They are more worried about shareholder returns and reduced overheads that they are about the individual employee. That's why enterprise bargaining (wage talks) is such a touchy subject with Big Business.

But, yes, they'll get a few applications, no doubt.

Just the same way they'll get lots of resignations, no doubt.

Cheers
Mick
