Systems What to do.... suggestions

My fellow TIMO'ers I need your help.
Here is my dilema.
Since getting laid off I have been unable to sleep. I have spoken to my Dr. about this and he prescribed some medicine but it had some adverse side effects. I asked him about it and he prescribed another med. When I do fall asleep it is at like 3 or 4 am. This is not good since I have to watch my 5 year old during the day.
Well I took some last night and tried to sleep, didn't work. I have been awake for close to 30 hrs and feel like crap. I have been drinking coffee like it is going out of style just so I could stay awake today and watch all 3 kids cuse of a snow day.

I have even been to a point in the not to distant past where I have been to tired to sleep. Have you ever been like that, it really is for the birds.

Any suggestions on what i can do to sleep at night. This has taken a toll on my health. I have gotten sick already this year, first time is a long time, and had it last for weeks.

Insomnia is no good. I have a chronic case myself (look at the times I post) Sounds like your's is stress induced. Stay away from caffine, and just try to relax, which is hard I know.
I hate it to, but I have learned to run on a few hours sleep, and catch a nap when I can. It really does suck

Good Luck

Yep dump the caffeine. When your wife gets home tonight no matter how bad you feel go out and run around the block a few times. come home drink some hot chocolate made with real milk. or just warm milk. Take a hot shower, 3 Advil and hit the sack.

(works for me)

Oh and if needed do that thing where you relax every muscle from your toes to your head.. I usually conk out some where 2/3rds up.

Soft foam earplugs. The kind you use for hunting. Buy them at Kmart or Walmart gun counters for like 35 cents a pair. You would be amazed how well you sleep when you can not hear a thing.

The real trick is to eliminate the stress and worry from your life. Of course this cant be accomplished until you find work. good Luck!

Definitely dump the caffeine.

Do you find it impossible to get to sleep, or to stay asleep?

I sometimes have problems with the first. On occasion, I'm subject to something just short of a panic attack: not fear, but an inability to stop thinking. At those times, I find a 5 mg diazepam (Valium) allows me, after about fifteen minutes, to stop obsessing and get to sleep. For some people, like my wife, even 1.25 mg will do the job. It's prescription, of course, but it's so nearly safe (and out of patent protection) that many people expect it to become nonprescription soon. But don't combine it with alcohol.

If it's the second: avoid caffeine (of course) but also booze, beer, wine. Those may relax you enough to nod off, but they tend to wake you during the night.

Thanks for the tips.

Theo I have been thinking about asking the Dr. about Valium. He has me on Ambien right now 10Mg. It is the first, I have a hard time going to sleep. My mind starts to wonder around. Like you said the inability to stop thinking.

The only reason that I am drinking coffee right now is to stay awake for my kids. I will be cutting that out after this cup.

Surreal I'm not sure about the run around the block, got all this snow to shovel, been out twice already today, but the Hot choc sounds good. Only problem is the wife doesn't get off work till 7:15 tonight. Plus, she might have to stay if people call in. She works at the local hospital, in the cardiac wing so they will need somebody there.

Jman I tried the earplugs when I worked 3rd shift. Can't get used to the feeling of something sticking in my ear while trying to sleep.

GZ3 - Great movie. Can I play Brad Pitts character? I think he plays a great mentally deranged person. IE; Fightclub and 12 monkeys

Well the wife is home and I took one of the Ambien tablets that the Dr. gave me. Should be asleep in about a half hour or so.

Surreal - My wife called and I read this post to her. I said the Hot Choc sounded good, so she stopped at the store and picked some up for me. Ain't she a sweetheart.

Night all

Um, Korgul? Chocolate has caffiene in it. Also, (lotsa folks are unaware of this,) regular tea like Liptons, etc. have more caffeine than even coffee!

Mountain Dew soda pop has absolutely unreal amounts of caffeine.

I used to have the problem you're describing, and I discovered that all the stuff I like has caffiene in it, and a caffeine junky will find this stuff and cherish it!

Hope this helps, buddy!
