switzerland is still a neutral country
and i think it has got good things and bad things!

Yeah we are neutral too. The army is quite small, and not too well equipped. Which means we are not ready for defence should anything happen, but the good side is we don't have any enemies.

A good point, that's why I mentioned that we don't really have any defence.

The government has been trying to buy about 16-24 new Eurofighters to replace our old Saabs but the protests from the liberals and the greens has been massive.

I personaly don't believe in neutrality.
I mean I believe in political neutrality, but every country should do it's best to have a defence of some kind.

Think of it this way, few could have imagined WW1 & 2 happening. But they did, and those nations that were not prepared fell. So it's better to be safe than sorry.

Yes, I have heard about the Typhoon being used as a political football in Austrian politics recently.

I don't think anyone expects Austrian participation in overseas peacekeeping and wars, but I agree that all countries should make efforts to protect and defend their land and citizens, from existing threats and potential ones. For that you need a professional, motivated and well-equipped military.

Historically, Swiss neutrality has benefitted from

a) mountainous inaccessibility
b) the provision of extremely reliable mercenary armies to countries (in exchange for protection)
c) wealth (from hiring out aforementioned mercenary armies )

In today's world of cruise missiles, strategic bombers and briefcase nukes, none of these have an impact on Swiss defence

I simply think the US should take over the world starting in europe. Perhaps austria or france because they roll over easy.
Ban the metric system and convert everyone to english which should not be a monumental task.
