Gee and I wonder what's to blame for this? Couldn't be our liberal academic system, or the liberal Teacher's Union, or have anything to do with Outcome Based Education...could it?

Jay Leno once interviewed americans coming out of an Egypt exhibition, he asked them if they new where Egypt was, out 15 people 1 new.
Where's all this tax money going ? The GNP is something like 4 trillion, surely some can go to education??

Money doesn't fix the problem CM. Our states that spend the most money on education almost always have the worst record at turning out educated students.

To some extent I think education in this country is different from other countries. While in Europe and Asia students are forced to "cram" and memorize lessons, here its more a creative approach which forces a student "to think out of the box".
Of course, the downside is she may not remember where Zambia is. But she would know where to look to find out everything about Zambia.
Very different approaches to education.

The first thing the school system need to do is teach these kids to read,write and do basic math. until this is acomplished they should not move past the elementary level.(no matter how old they are.)
