Once in a while, someone will make a statement or use a word or make a joke that somehow misfires. I recall a joke I posted recently, from which I bacKpeddled and apologized when it had become obvious it had indeed misfired.
What I am talking about is clinging to a failing stance.
Regretably, for a variety of reasons almost all of us, Members and Mods, are prone to it. There are a lot of erudite technical reasons I could pull up from Social and Personality Psych for this, but they all essentially boil down to something known to us all: Human Nature.
Fortunately, there is an alternative to
clinging to a failing stance.
The alternative is stepping away long enough to see how may perceive it, stepping back from perhaps ill-conceived even if well-intentioned language, clarifying the situation rather than adding more miscommunication--and , dosh garn, even apologizing. And moving on from there.
Certainly an articulate person, can find alternative language to express oneself. Ah! but here is the catch--those who criticise too need to find clear language than doesn't add undue emotion to a situation, but seeks a work-out. They, too, need to avoid creating a failing stance, and then clinging to it.
Fortunately, there is enough good-will going around these Boards to limit these flare-ups to so few that they stand-out when they occur.
Be of good cheer, all.
