Something I Meant To POST Before.

Once in a while, someone will make a statement or use a word or make a joke that somehow misfires. I recall a joke I posted recently, from which I bacKpeddled and apologized when it had become obvious it had indeed misfired.

What I am talking about is clinging to a failing stance.

Regretably, for a variety of reasons almost all of us, Members and Mods, are prone to it. There are a lot of erudite technical reasons I could pull up from Social and Personality Psych for this, but they all essentially boil down to something known to us all: Human Nature.

Fortunately, there is an alternative to clinging to a failing stance.

The alternative is stepping away long enough to see how may perceive it, stepping back from perhaps ill-conceived even if well-intentioned language, clarifying the situation rather than adding more miscommunication--and , dosh garn, even apologizing. And moving on from there.

Certainly an articulate person, can find alternative language to express oneself. Ah! but here is the catch--those who criticise too need to find clear language than doesn't add undue emotion to a situation, but seeks a work-out. They, too, need to avoid creating a failing stance, and then clinging to it.

Fortunately, there is enough good-will going around these Boards to limit these flare-ups to so few that they stand-out when they occur.

Be of good cheer, all.

DOOOOOOG

A Clear-up is better than a blow-up.

I liked this. I believe that most of us here are truly good people. For the most we get a long real well, which can be tough considering the ethnic diversity we have here.

Shoot, Megalos, I believe you just wrote a mini-manual on human relations!

Are you talking about the (all-too-human) need to be RIGHT? I've known way too many people like that. Mostly idiots, IMO.

It takes a much larger person to say "Ooops! I guess I had my head up my a$$ on that one" than your average run-of the-mill humanoid who holds onto a position no matter how proveably silly. I have great respect for the former, and I don't even waste my time on the latter.

But....DooooG...please reassure us that this doesn't signal a change in your style, does it?

Because we love our DooooooG!!!

Talking to someone face to face without being misunderstood is tough enough. Talking on the phone is harder. Posting messages on a board like this is the worst form of communication for someone taking a statement the wrong way.

Heck, you can't see a persons facial expression or hear the tone of their voice. We as members need to be mindful of this when we post or read a post. It's very easy to take someone the wrong way.

If you are joking then there are smileys that help. If there is a misunderstanding then PM the person and work it out if you can. We must remember that there are prospective members lurking about, reading out posts. A FLAME war between 2 or more members will surely scare off someone who reads our posts and is thinking about contributing to this board.

Let us all be a little considerate of one another.

Mike

OBTW: Good post MegalosSkylaki.

Well said, Xeroid!

Although, in my experience here on TechIMO, it ain't no big thang. People here tend to be pretty observant of this protocol...one of the reasons I love this place so much.

Come on Mortis, you are more articulate than that

DOOOOG

Re-read one of Hegal's most awful books. That should help.
