Kids Classic books and serial killers/ mass murderers

It has been reported that at least 2 serial killers had a stash of copies of Catcher in the Rye in their homes when they were raided after their crimes were linked to them. What is the link?

My wife works with a guy who is mad at the world. He is a typical extremely liberal activist who is just mad at everyone and believes there is a conspiracy in everything. She (being the logical and loving conservative that she is) made a deal with him that she would read Catcher in the Rye if he would read What's So Great About America by Dinesh D'Souza (an EXTREMELY good conservative writer and analyst). She read Salinger's book over the weekend, but likened it to a Seinfeld episode where nothing really happens, although it was entertaining. What is the hub-ub about Catcher in the Rye?

Why is there such a cult following for this book? Why would a serial killer have 50 copies of it in his house? Where's the link?

Thanks for your thoughts.
Dave

The second one with The Catcher in the Rye was a copy-cat I think. The first killed John Lennon of if I remember right (had a copy on him) and the second killed a young actress he was stalking (also carrying a copy). He carried it because he admired Lennon's killer.

There was a rumor a while back that the FBI was informed any time The Catcher in the Rye was checked out at a library.

i ran across a copy of Catcher in the Rye at St Vinneys,so i bought it and read it.

tho the writer had the ability to keep me interested,i was confused to what the "moral" of the story was. i considered reading it a waste of time.

i ll stick with james patterson / patty cornwell/john grisham/jeff deaver

edit> FBI?? do ya think they got cameras in St Vinneys?? LOL

edit II> i see Animal Farm is on your first links page. now if someone had a few dozen copys of that in their closet.....?

'catcher didn't do much for me ................... but bout serial killers - did you see that story about the bar in Washington state - that the sniper guy hung out in?........ previously patrons were Ted Bundy, the Hillside Strangler, and some other murderer - place sounds like something out of a Steven King novel.
