Bernard over-reacted. He should've prolly just shown these thugs the gun and wham they'd be gone. It was not necessary to shoot. But given his history/background, he did what he had to.
But then the same agrument holds for the thugs. Given their background, they did what they had to. They took the risk and got the short end of the stick.
Moral of the Story: Guns incite people to violence. They bring out this "coke-type" (Not Pepsi-Coke, epidemic, Coke Coke) of high in people who take leave of their senses and think they can do it all.
