Wish me luck

For some time I have been wanting to start a car salvage yard. Slowly over time My dad and I have been putting pieces together to make this happen.
I got a 5 acre tract of land, small metal building on it, last year we bought a metal crusher, and have been buying a few cars along the way to stock up some parts.
Last week we picked up a 82 Chevy wrecker, and it runs, and works great 1500 bucks (not a typo)
So today, one of the towing services is going out of buisness (retiring) and offered us all the cars on his lot, prolly 150 or so at a very reasonable cost.
This should put everything in place to at least start making some cash. Prolly a couple of weeks to get everything moved, and see what we have, and sell/trade/buy all along the way.But it looks like this thing is finally gonna fly

The sad thing is I've always wanted to do this

I love old junk

BC

Good Luck to Ya!

Hope you have one of those cool programs that lists all the parts that you have for the cars.

One of the local dealers around here has each one of his cars on a computer screen and can tell you exactly if he has a radio knob or doorhandle without leaving his office.

We were trying to find parts for a 85 firebird and hit the jackpot with him!

One suggestion....keep your tools in your back pocket cuz the person that comes to buy a part will never have any to take it off the junker!

.... I love junk too!

A great way to make some money is by towing car to your land and charging the insurance company for storage until they/the owner decides what to do with the car. Most insurance companies will pay $10.00 a day per car.

digby0668 is correct. My brother-in-law and his friend got into the junkyard and towing business. They got on some type of list with all the local law enforcement agencies and the State Patrol. They make good money picking up wrecks that can't be driven. You'd need a rollback though cause some of them don't have enough nonflat tires left to be towed.

Also, don't get over extended with insurance companies. They make their money by managing cashflow. They will holdout paying you as long as they can.

Good luck!

I am envious.

I looked at getting into the same business in SC and it was going to take at least $500k in working capital. I had a different business model than you though. I was looking at getting on the auction circuit for totaled vehicles. My main source of income would have been from insurance companies.

If you come across any 67 mustangs convertibles for parts, please PM me.

Man I'd love to do the same, so good luck and I hope all goes well. I have a family member who had owned and ran a huge salvage yard here for many years.

Have you checked with local authorities about necessary permits etc?
They can be a real pain I'd imagine
They probablyhave some rules about removing some of the fluids/battery from the car before putting it on the land.

Good luck!
/me has gotten many a car part from a salvage yard
