Space Shuttle aerodynamics question

Revisiting the “escape velocity” thread, I have a question for any Shuttle-head/NASA-types: Everyone knows the shuttle rolls 180 degrees shortly after lift-off to steer into an orbital trajectory away from land. Does anyone know if this roll is accomplished using the flight surfaces on the orbiter, or is it just nozzle deflection of the SRB’s(Solid Rocket Boosters) or main engines that induces this roll? Are the orbiter’s controls locked in the neutral position for atmospheric flight? I could see them getting ripped off at 12, 500mph while still in the atmospheric phase of launch. Any ideas?

No peoblem creatures. I am checking out what the shuttle is doing right now. It is pretty cool to see the shuttle with the earth as a background.
