Fish Kill at Panama City Fla

A pal's mom just got back from Panama City Florida and reported that the Gulf of Mexico was "Off-Limits" for swimming because of a fish kill.

No other details.

Tyndell AFB is directly east of this area,, hmmmm .

It's related to "red tide".

http://www.msnbc.com/local/WJHG/M235439.asp?0ct=-302

http://floridamarine.org/features/vi...le.asp?id=9670

Red Tide Confirmed Along Local Beaches.

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fl., Oct. 14 - If you have been to the beach in the last day or two you no doubt have noticed the irritation to your throat and eyes.

The problems are the beginning stages of Red Tide. The west end of Panama City Beach is already having a problem with dead fish washing up on shore. Red Tide is an algae bloom which depletes oxygen from the water causing the fish to suffocate.
It also creates irritants, which are generally not harmful to humans, although those with breathing problems may experience some more difficulties than normal.
Many people are already reporting raspy throats, coughing, inflamed sinus and red-watery eyes.
Earlier tests for Red Tide in local waters came back negative. But, new tests done on Monday show what some residents feared. What we are seeing now is the beginning of the Red Tide. The test results were confirmed late Monday by state biologists.

What is a Florida red tide?

OMG...all these years, I thought "Red Tide" was tongue-in-cheek for ...women's issues. I seem to recall a joke or two even.
I sure learned something today.

WTH?

Hey Doc, I live 1 hour west of Tyndall and we've heard nothing about this! I seriously doubt that our water is A-OK and theirs isn't...it's the same string of beaches!

Thank you very much for this info, my son and I love to spend time in the water.

Umm...what about Tyndall...

Are you suggesting that we are engaging in some supert secret fuel dump into the Atlantic?

Red tide, my friend.

No Marshall Dillion, did I state that the govt had anything to do with it.

Granted, we all know the US Military is exempt from the same environmental laws that effect the rest of us.

Fact, not speculation.

Sad too.

I just want to know why Tyndall was brought up then. Seemed kinda random if that's the case.

And, yes, testing of explosives, alternative fuels, etc. require open regulations, but we need the room to develop defense systems. Not to many other agecnies are allowed to experiment with nuclear powered rockets
