I now know why managers get the big bucks.

We are moving the office packing this week and moving next.

I have a few mission critical systems that we need to get on line monday morning. So I talked to the facilities manager and asked if I could set up a temporary computer lab. In the proposed lab space. He said "sure". I asked the next logical question will I have power and data ports in the room.

Now mind you this is a computer lab with 7 systems. He says no one told him that we would need power or data in the room.

None of that work is budgeted. And that they did not want to pay overtime so nothing will be done over the weekend. So rather than pay 5 people overtime they will allow 22 people to go almost a week with out any terminals or files for almost a week.

Whoops

know how you feel. My boss ordered a rackmounted Sun server. Only problem is my rack is a 2 poster, and the server is about 3 feet long!

Oh the stupidity!

This reads so much like my work place.
Does anyone else think of "dilbert" when you read these things??

Seems to me that the managers didnt get proper communication from the people under them.....

With all the other work and responsablities that a manager has they must rely on the information they receive to be correct....

Epedemic you have most likely known you would be moving locations for a couple of weeks yet it seems that you have waited until 2 days (thursday afternoon) before the weekend of the move to verify that the needed items will be inplace? Seems to me you dropped the ball as well as you never mention that you spec'd out what kind of power (120v, 208v, L5-20 or L6-30 connectors on the ends of those needed circuits) nor what kind of data ports you were going to require, cat5, coax, fiber?.......

Zen, Who else was involved in the spec'ing out of the sun server? In every place that I have worked the manager is basically the LAST person involved in getting new equipment as the admin over the equipment is who does the leg work and spec'ing of the equipment that they will be over and then presents it to the manager for budget approval and ordering....Also if someone needs to be blamed I would be jumping on the Sun Sales rep for not verifing that the server, since you mention that it's a rack mount unit, would have the correct mounting system.

Epidemic, what you experienced is pretty common in corporate life everywhere. I remember working at a German company many years ago. When I resigned, they wanted a manual I had to be returned. After I returned it, the corporate office spent in excess of $50 in faxes/phone calls to confirm I had returned the $10 manual.

This kind of thing is very common in larger companies.

Mntsnow,

I took it upon my self to create a floor plan. I submitted the floor plan the plan was rejected and it turns out then it was used.

I spoke with my manager and told him that I should be included in the meetings as I knew there would would be oversights. I was not given a final floor plan until this wednesday. I turns out to be my floor plan as redrawn by another person. The new floor plan does not show the machines in the computer plan. The facilities manager who is heading the project should also have prompted for power requirements.

That aside, todays floor plan has changed again. not in numbers of cubes but the numbering of the cubes. So the files and everything are now labeled incorrectly for 90% of the move.

They also told us the block of phone numbers we would have and after we informed verizon of our new numbers they changed them. Only informing us of the change 1 day before the move. This makes us have to place a change order into the verizon system. The kicker is that they knew about the change 2 weeks ago. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrg
