Excuse me Coming through here........Long Rant

Well that just about sums myself up over the past week er I should say the past 2 weeks.

I haven't been around timo much cuz of classes. Fall term has started and finally im back on campus and I never thought I'd see myself say this but I wish all my classes were online again. Why? This college im going to is a total joke.

First off the one engineering teacher I have has a Medical Doctor degree. He is a total disgrace to the engineering feild. He is a part time teacher there and apparently has "learned" all this stuff on his own, therefore the college has (teachers own words) "apparently found him useful". The other deaf student and msyelf decided to swap into the other class with the other teacher with a qualified engineers degree and knows what the hell he is talking about, and doesn't ramble on how to use a freaking screwdriver. (dead serious) I about died laughing class cuz he rambled on for about 15 minutes on how to use a screwdriver. This is the medical doctor teacher im referring too. Unfortunatly i couldn't get out of his lab class cuz the other teacher lab hours doesn't work for me with my kids but at least the lectures I don't have to watch an idiot. The doctor teacher was also shocked that i finished a 2 hour lab in 15 minutes. he was like you are done? I said yes im done. he goes how? So i explained the entire lab to him in quick 5 minutes and i decided to be the onery B***** that I can be and decided to ask him some really techincal questions to see how he answers. His mouth fell open and say, well ummm, we'll get to that later. Cripes I could teach that class better than him. To make matter worse, this is a repeat class cause the college wouldn't accept this credit and all this inof is like OLD OLD OLD OLD OLD news to me. So I will breeze through that fast enough.

Secondly, my advisor wanted me to take a lower level of math cauze i haven't taken any math for a couple of years. i said no way, i can catch up, all i have to do is schdule some tutoring appointments to get up to speed. I can do the work, i just need to jar this ole memory of mine to get working in the right order and not backwards. But.............the tutoring center is a major big time joke. the ratio of tutors to students is 2:13+. Very bad ratio, so I requested for indivual tutoring for like 1/2 to 1 hour few times a week. Should be no problem, But noooooooo im told they are under fincical burdens and had to cut back on tutors and now you just go there and sit at the table with your math course number listed and ask your peers for help. WTH??? i don't want to ask another student that is there for help as well. they will only screw me up. Sooo I don't know what to do. just swallow my pride and drop down a level of math just so i can get a refreser course or what? I need to decide fast.

my VB teacher is awseme tho. He is good. Love how he uses live objects to decribe, objects, properties, classes and such. He is good. I think will do well in his class.

my vb class my live captionier always shows up on time, she is always there ready to go before i even show up. however for my enginnering class is another matter, 3 times now no captionior and i had to leave class to go get an interpreter. Todayhappened again so left to go get an interpreter and no terps advailable. I told the other student if our captionier can not show up that they need to send in a back up terp to sign the class to us. Geezz. they are required to do that!!!! So ended up having to bail class today, no fun just sitting there watching his backside and only hear a drone of words and no understanding. (teachers have a nasty habit of talking wtih your back to you.) grrr. anyways...

now to top this off but not completely, my advisor is an total jerk. I do not get along with him at all and he has screwed up so many things of mine, not only that he doesn't respond timely to my emails. (timely i mean within 24 hours)

I never had these probelms at my old college in salem. The advisor is hearing whereas my old advisor in salem was full Deaf himself so he totally understood students. my current advisor doesn't understand us at all! ARggggggggggggggggg sometimes i just want to wring his neck!

oh ya and hte parking is for the pits. first week of classes was always late to class even tho i showed up on campus an hour early for class, it takes a minumum of 35 to 75 minutes to find a parking spot. no kidding, but no fear i found the trick, I need to arrive at least 10 minutes before 9am and then no problems parking, however that makes me 2 hours early for classes 3 days aweek and 4 hours early 2 days a week. which is fine cuz i can use that time to study.

Now im trying also to find a laptop to suit my needs cuz im rarely home to do my work. (forget the computer labs) they are too far squashed for my comfort. I can't hande sitting smack dab next to someone on a computer where you only got about 12 - 14 inches of elbow room.

anyhow, Rant off......
sorry was so long, had to vent.

Man, that sucks Neo.

You'd think that not having an interperater available would be something you could really raise a stink over, if you wanted.

Can you change your advisor? If he's not sending you in the direction you want to go, it's time to find someone that understands what you want.

I had a school jerk me around once. That won't happen again. I payed for an education I never got. You gotta walk in there with your steel toes and start takin' names.

Don't sweat it Neo!
I mean, just think of my problems...when I paid for gas at the pump today and pulled my receipt out, I tore off one of the corners!

Just an attempt to make you smile.

Well Whir, I wish I could change advisor but the problem is he is the only advisor for the Deaf Students. An jerk of a one too. So not sure what im gonna do, other than our carrer advisor. but the carrer advisor has nothing to do with advocating for services I need. That is what this other advisor is for and he doesn't advocate very well at all unfortunatley.

Im keeping my steel boots on cuz Im not giving up. I'll gradute one way or another. Just gonna take a bit longer then I thought. :sigh:

Perhaps he is impressed with his newfound skill?

Watch out for those medical people who think they know tech stuff Neo - in my experience medical people think they know almost everything, but in fact only know some stuff about medicine!

Doubt he will try to teach you to use a scalpel - he probably thinks that only medically trained people can do that! But in the same breath he will then teach you all about screwdrivers.

Bad about the advisor - is there any way to get above him and make whoever is responsible for provision of services to deaf students aware of his incompetence? Maybe even all the way to Board level. This is where your steel caps will come in handy!

Sometimes the bad will lead to good. I know you're a survivor, Neo, and survivors have a tendency not to let things get in there way of getting stuff done!

Cheers
Mick

Check out Doc's deals forum, I've seen a couple of good laptops in there.

As for school; You have paid them for a service (education) and are doing your part. Now it's time for them to catch up.

Keep on plugging away. (Maybe a self defense course to work off the steam?).

This can be GOOD and BAD advice Neo. I had an instructor that didn't know diddly about Basic Red Cross First Aid and Emergency Care (the class she was teaching) and quickly got into it with her. It ended up going to the Board of Regents and since I was qualified to teach the course, guess who ended up teaching it?

A little background may be in order so-o-o, -- I was an EMT-A and Red Cross certified Instructor for Advanced Red Cross First Aid and Emergency Care at the time. But my major required Basic, so I signed up for Basic, as they wouldn't substitute my (then current) Advanced Instructor. Now try carrying a 21 credit load and being asked to teach 8 hours a week + prep time.
