Why I hate JC Penney or Why does nobody listen to me ?

For over 35 years I've told the family that I do NOT like pullover knit type shirts, so what do I keep getting, you guessed it..

So I drop by the local #@&*_+!^$ Mall into the Penney's

The very nice young lady says "No problem, just pick out what you want in exchange"
[Great, I think]

So I pick out some nice long sleeve button up dress shirts, one dark purple, one black and one dark blue, bout $60.00 worth.

Take them to the counter and she say's "That's 45.10"

Huh, I go ?

Uhh, she says, I can only give you $5.00 each for these shirts cause you don't have the receipt and they've been on sale at some time.

[I'm thinking, when has $30 shirts been $5.00 at Penney's/]

Stunned, I almost took them and ripped them in half and threw them in the floor.
Better judgement took over and I told her that I'd just give them away because the receipt was not available.

When you tell people year after year "I do NOT WEAR PULLOVER shirts, especially those dam knit things"
and they keep buying them over and over.

I feel like saying
"HEY, I'm sorry I'm not your Georgia Tech graduate who hates everyone except white collar male management types, but quit buying me these goofy looking shirts"

I know, I should be grateful that someone buys me anything, but it is a TOTAL waste of money, cause I ain't gonna wear these limp wrist looking clothes

rant off

Hmmm...maybe they think you'd look good in a pullover knit shirt? You know, like maybe they're trying to "Art Direct" you a little? This may well be true if it's always women giving you these shirts!

Of course, if it's guys, then they are clearly pulling your leg.

Doc, you gave in too easily at JCP. You gotta make an issue of it right there on the floor with all customers listening. These sales associates don't have sense anyways and most are just new and untrained.

But you bark and the supervisor rushes over and whatever may be the background, 99% the customer benefits specially in stores like JCP, Macys, Sears, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Saks ......

No way they want a unsatisfied customer. And another little known fact is that if any clothes are returned, the store simply debits the supplier and they lose nothing. In fact, when they debit the supplier, they don't even return the actual clothes.

Eventually these returns show up after re-labelling in the clearance section and the stores make money on something they never paid for.

The suppliers get shafted.

Go Guerilla!

Really it seems more and more that the big retail stores are closing the training dept.

Example: Tried to talk to the relavent (sp?) manager about stocking a different item. After over ten minutes of standing around we asked what was taking so long (if they were busy we would understand). Answer: Who are you? (From the person who had called the manager for us...)

It gets even more basic. Remember when the appearence of the store as clean and safe was an important item of business? Or being able to talk to the managers/dept heads?

Or the simple fact that the company might have a price matching policy, but that store doesn't know of it?

But on the matter of clothes; Ties make a great gardening tool (according to my dad). Short sleeved dress shirts have a use; Junior Management. Pull overs belong in the recycle bin (check out the next couple clearance sales).

I've once had similar situation in the past with my family. I solved that problem by doing the following: When I opened up the present, I then told them that I've allways said for years not to get the particular item for me becuase I don't like it. Then I hand the item back over to the familiy member and tell them they should return it.

This causes the family member to go through procedure of them having to return the item and plus they are more likely to find the receipt if the receipt if missing because they have a financial motive to do so. The incovenence of the family member going through all this also finally imprints onto their mind that they need to stop buying a particular item for me because I dont want the item and will not accept it.

The problem with returning the item yourself is that chances are they will forget that you hate the item and buy you a similar one in the furture.

Now on the issue of JC Penny. I think you should consider yourself lucky to even get $5 a shirt for not having a receipt. I think all business shouldn't have to give a refund or exchange if the customer doesn't have a receipt. What's to stop a person from purchasing a shirt at goodwill for a dollar or stealing a shirt at another store and then going to JC Penny and trying to basically get money for it by performing a return scam. I'm not saying you did this. But I think stores need to have no receipt no money back policy to protect against scams or loss of money to them. Because when the store loses money on this stuff they raise prices to compensate for it and the rest of us pay for it.

On another issue Shahani wrote:

No I believe what really happens is that JC Penny (or any other business) purchases their garments at wholesale prices from the manufacture and then sells the item to their customer at a higher price known as retail price. When a customer returns the item it is then put back on the shelf as a clearance item or regular retail item. It usually depends on what kind of item it is and the condition of it when it is returned. If the item is put on the shelf as a clearance item then the store will usually make enough money or close enough to what they paid the manufacture for it.
Moveover, the supplier (manufacture) nevers get shafted in this situation.
