Calling all big brains. A question about rocket propulsion.

If you are traveling 180,000 and you have a rocket where the gass is expelled at 100,000 do you still go faster.

Yes.

It all adds to your motion. At least in a 'flat' frictionless environment.

Lost the link, give me a few.

If the answer is yes then other than fuel what force acts on us causing light speed not to be exceeded.

What physically happens if I am traveling @ 185,000 mps and I accellerate 1,300 mps.

relative to me I am but going a mere 1300 mps faster.

Not the site I was hoping for, but in english for the most part...

Have fun...

Was afraid that was where you were going...

As you approach the speed of light the amount of energy needed to go faster increases expotentialy (sp?). to increase that last little bit would require a literally infinate amount of energy.

This is more Einstien than Newton. It has to do with limits to matter and energy and seperate states and a whole bushal of things.

I'd suggest looking up the work of Einstein and checking the later work that would refernced from there. Or Dirak, but few people even want to know about his work (the equations shoot back!).

Are you interested in the tech/math end or in english?

Ep, if that is 180,000 miles per second (speed of light) then you won't go faster. if its miles per day, yeah sure you would , with a big jerk.

I of course am looking for the english version. I think the old Einstien got his little slide ruler wrong. mainly because if my acceleration is only referenced to me. Hence if the galaxy was moving at the speed in question just under the speed of light and you were to leave a body in that galaxy and accelerate a few miles per second some force would act on you making you stop acceleration. Given a perfect vaccum and no frame of reference how fast was the singularity that spawned the universe going.

I know what Einstien says and he is flat out wrong. ???I think???

If it takes no more energy to go from 0 earth speed to 1000 mph than to go from 1000 to 2000 mph then what force acts on speeds just under the speed of light.

A math for dummies sight would be nice.

Mind you a rocket at rest is already traveling at 9/10,000'ths the speed of light.

At what speed does the logorithmic mass increase begin to be measurable. Voyager may be traveling at near 1 thousandth of the speed of light.

Of course if you travel back tward the center of the universe you could exceed the speed of light by at least 9/10 thousandths referenced to earth.

I think as you approach the spped of light, your mass increases and theoretically approaches infinity as you approach this speed.

Also time stands still.

Ep, can you think in five dimensions? Like the regular 3 dimensions (x,y,z axes), time and velocity?

something about your mass changing as you accelerate seems to be counter intuitive. It is a blip in his formula a convenient explaination that answered the much of the relativity question.

What is the force that acts on you when you reach a certain speed and makes your mass begin to grow.

who is to say that we are not traveling in excess of the speed of light right now. If the singularity that spawned the universe was in motion relative to nothing would it appear to be moving.

If you can exert a force from the exhaust of a rocket for long enough we will keep excellerating until we hit a logarithmic mass increase Up untill that point we have no problem accellerating.

I want more explaination. Why does mass become infinite. Would that kill you to even approach the speed of light.

I remember tales about reaching the speed of sound as well.
