Talk AVIATION 101 (funny)

A few of my favorites:

If you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. If you pull the stick back, the houses get smaller. Unless you keep pulling the stick all the way back -- then the houses get bigger again.

Flying's not dangerous; crashing is what's dangerous.

Takeoffs are optional. But landings are mandatory.

Try to keep the number of your landings equal to the number of your takeoffs.

Speed is life, altitude is life insurance. When in doubt, hold on to your altitude -- no one has ever collided with the sky.

Learn from the mistakes of others -- you won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.

Those are some good ones.

"If you have to make a forced landing at night, turn on the landing lights to see the landing area. If you don't like what you see, turn 'em back off...."

Cool site.

Those are good.

Here's one I came across in a book I'm reading:

"Thou shall carefully monitor thy airspeed, lest the earth shall rise up and smite thee."

Good one Thud. I got off on a tangent and found the Aviation 101 page when I took a look at the web site you mentioned in the How did you choose your nicname? thread. The name of the site was Thud Ridge. I've always been fascinated by Vietnam era aircraft because my Dad served in the Air Force during that time and worked on the F105 Thunderchief while stationed in Thailand in 1968. (he was temporarily transfered to the Tactical Air Command during that year). My father-in-law was also in the Air Force during that time. Yes, my wife and myself are Air Force brats who grew up on Air Force bases all over the U.S. (& Germany in my wifes case).

I remember my dad taking me along to the flight line when I was a little boy and letting me help him (on weekend transient alert duty when no one else was around). My first job was at the commissary at Duluth AFB in Minnesota when I was in high school. I graduated from junior college at Gulf Coast in Panama City Florida when my dad was stationed at Tyndall AFB Florida.

My dad retired from the Air Force in 1975 and is a farmer now raising beef cattle. My father-in-law passed 2 months ago and also retired from the Air Force about the same time. My wife and myself were never at the same base at the same time because her father was in the Tactical Air Command and my father was in the Air Defense Command. Funny that I should meet and marry another Air Force brat after both our fathers retired from the military.

Mike

That's really cool, Xeroid. Of course the F105's were long gone by the time I joined. They were sweet old planes, though. The only one I've ever seen is on static display at Keesler AFB, MS. That's one big plane to only have the one engine! I was watching a movie a while back ("Bat 21," I think) that has some footage of them on an air strike. Pretty good flick, if you can find it.

The wing I'm with now (35th Fighter Wing) flew the F-105's in the "Wild Weasel" role out of Geroge AFB, CA. One of our fighter squadrons was at Udorn, Thailand during Vietnam, but flying F-4's. I was thinking our other squadron (13th Fighter Squadron)flew F-105's out of Thailand during the war, but their site is down now so I can't say for sure.

I had been planning to post up some pics of some of our aircraft, so keep your eye out for them.

~Edit: Found the info about the 13 FS I was looking for:

Quote:
Its history includes a leading role in the Vietnam conflict flying F-105 Thunderchiefs from Korat Royal Thai AFB, Thailand, until October 1967. The squadron was then transferred to Udorn RTAFB, Thailand, flying the F-4D Phantom IIs.

Will do, Thud.

Mike

OBTW, I showed the Thud Ridge site to my dad when he came over this afternoon. He realy enjoyed it. Spent about an hour and a half checking it out. He told me today which unit he was in when in SEA but I've forgotten already. I'll ask him tomorrow.
